5th Generation iPod

The classic iPod moved to a much larger display with the 5G iPod, introduced in October 2005, the first iPod to support video. The 2.5″ color display would be standard on every classic iPod to come.

5G iPodDespite the larger screen, the 5G iPod was thinner and lighter than its predecessors. Like the iPod nano introduced a month prior, the 5G iPod was available in white or black. This would be the last iPod with a plastic face – assuming you consider the 5.5G iPod a minor update to the 5G.

And just as with the two previous iPod versions, there was also a U2 Special Edition of the 5G iPod.

Unlike competing devices that used MP3 file compression, the iPod with iTunes was designed to use the superior AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) audio format in addition to MP3. AAC generally provides superior sound quality over MP3 at the same bit rate, especially at 96 kbps and lower sampling rates, as well as more efficient encoding, which means smaller files.
