Original iPhone

Steve Jobs announced the original iPhone in January 2007, putting an end to years of rumors about Apple combining an iPod and a mobile phone.

original Apple iPhoneThe iPhone would be a touch-based smartphone without a physical keyboard. And unlike competing touch-based devices, the iPhone was designed to be controlled with a finger and did not need a stylus. At its core, the iPhone operating system  was based on the same OS X found inside Macs.

The iPhone had been in development since 2005, and it wouldn’t come to market until June 2007, but it was far enough along for Jobs to demo. It would launch exclusively on AT&T Wireless in the United States, coming to the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Portugal in November 2007. The first iPhone was exclusive to GSM networks and used EDGE for its data connection rather than the newer, faster 3G, which has over 6x the bandwidth of EDGE.

Apple didn’t allow AT&T to discount the iPhone. With a two-year contract, the 4 GB model would set you back US$499 and the 8 GB, $599. Despite the price, many stores were sold out within hours, and some customers had been camping out awaiting the iPhone’s release for days.

Time magazine called the iPhone the invention of the year for 2007. Apple sold over 6.1 million units before it was replaced by the iPhone 3G.

It’s hard to believe it today, but originally the iPhone only had a small set of apps provided by Apple. It wasn’t until iPhone OS 2.0 and the App Store launched in July 2008 that the iPhone allowed third-party software.

The original iPhone was replaced by the iPhone 3G on July 11, 2008.
