iPhone 4 (CDMA)

On January 11, 2011, Verizon announced that it had reached an agreement with Apple and would soon be offering the iPhone 4 to its customers. Prior to this, the iPhone had been an AT&T Wireless exclusive in the United States.

iPhone 4The new version of the iPhone 4 was CDMA only, where all previous versions had been GSM only. The United States was unique in the world in having more people on CDMA networks than on GSM. In the rest of the world, GSM dominated.

This was the only time in the history of the iPhone that Apple produced the same model with separate versions for the two most popular protocols in the wireless world.

New with the Verizon iPhone was a personal hotspot feature that let you share your iPhone’s 3G data connection with other devices. Unfortunately, Verizon’s 3G data network, based on older technology, generally provided less than half the speed of AT&T’s GSM network at the time.

When the iPhone 4 went on sale through Verizon, it set a recond for first-day sales of a single model.

The GSM and CDMA versions of the iPhone 4 had different but parallel versions of iOS 4. From iOS 5 forward, there was a single unified version of iOS.

The iPhone 4S replaced the iPhone 4 as Apple’s top-end smartphone in October 2011. The 8 GB version remained in production until September 2013.
