Memory Upgrades: Quadra 800, Apple Workgroup Server 80

The Quadra 800 and Apple Workgroup Server 80 have 8 MB of memory on the motherboard and a single bank of four SIMM sockets for memory expansion as far as 136 MB. This was one of the first generation of Macs to use 72-pin SIMMs.

Quadra 800With the rear of the computer away from you, you will see 4 SIMM sockets in the front center of the motherboard.

Each SIMM socket can be filled with a 1 MB, 4 MB, 8 MB, 16 MB, or 32 MB SIMM. You can use different capacities in each bank, but because the Quadra 800 uses a new memory controller that supports interleaving, you should install memory in pairs of matched SIMMs to achieve best performance – 5-10% better, according to Apple. The 72-pin SIMMs must be 60ns or faster.

VRAM, Where More Memory Means Less Speed
