RasterOps Horizon 24
The RasterOps Horizon 24 is a 12" NuBus card compatible with 68K- and PowerPC-based Macs running up to Mac OS 8.1. It may be compatible with higher versions of the Mac OS, but no information for Mac OS 8.5-8.6 is available at this time, and it's doubtful that the card is compatible with Mac OS 9.
Details
The card provides standard QuickDraw acceleration. Resolution and colour support information is incomplete at this time. Below is what I know for sure:
- 640 x 480 up to 24-bit
- 640 x 870 up to 24-bit
- 832 x 624 up to 24-bit
- 1024 x 768 up to 24-bit
- 1152 x 870 (colour depth unknown; probably 24-bit)
- 1600x1200 (colour depth unknown; probably 24-bit)
Software
RasterOps video card drivers can be downloaded from the Mac Driver Museum, where ShrinkWrap disk images are available for RasterOps Graphics Install v3.2 and v3.3, MoviePak, MoviePak2, and VideoTime.
Notes
- According to RasterOps this card is incompatible with the Mac II, IIx, and IIcx.
- Compatible with G3 upgrades for NuBus Power Macs.
- 4 SIMM slots allow for expansion of up to 264 MB VRAM for GWorld functions or as a RAM disk.
- Requires at least System 7.
- Supports optional daughter card upgrade with AT&T DSPs for Photoshop acceleration. As with most DSP upgrades, this option is probably incompatible with Mac OS 7.6 or higher.
- One of these just went on eBay for over US$200. It's a very good card.
- This might be a heavily enhanced version of the Apple 8•24GC card without the compatibility problems.
