‘It Can’t Happen Here’

The terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon was truly a shocking event for everyone, whether they knew people working at these places or not. I guess we all thought that the U.S. was immune to terrorist attacks such as this. Hopefully the government will learn from this how to better protect the citizens of this country – and we will all realize “It can’t happen here” is not true.

Sadly, as with other tragedies that have happened in past years, many people will just go back to their daily lives, maintaining the “It can’t happen here” state of mind.

That is a whole problem in itself. “It can’t happen here” is completely false – it can happen anywhere. For example, Columbine. When it came on the news, the people of the town all said that they thought it couldn’t happen there, not to them. The fact is, tragedies such as this and others can happen in any city, any state – and people need to be aware of it.

While you don’t need to live in fear, you should keep it in the back of your mind to be careful, and if you notice anything suspicious, make sure you let someone know. Of course, you also have to trust your “gut feeling.” If something feels very wrong, it often is.

My thoughts and condolences go out to those who lost friends or loved ones in this recent tragedy.
