13" MacBook Core 2 (May 2007)

Overview

Six months after moving the Macbook to Intel's Core 2 Duo CPU, Apple upgraded the MacBook again. The improved model is faster, has twice as much RAM on the low end, includes a faster SuperDrive (2.16 GHz models), and has bigger hard drives.

All MacBooks now include 1 GB of RAM, and speeds have been bumped by 167 MHz, and 802.11n WiFi networking is now standard.

The MacBook is available only with a glossy display and includes an unusual keyboard, which has received mixed reviews. Try it before you decide you want a MacBook.

The new MacBook is available in three configurations:

  1. 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Combo drive, 80 GB 5400 rpm hard drive, 1 GB RAM, Intel 950 graphics, built-in iSight, and a 1280 x 800 display for US$1,099 in white. This model now has the same 4 MB shared cache as the faster MacBooks.
  2. 2.16 GHz, dual-layer SuperDrive, 120 GB hard drive, 1 GB RAM, otherwise identical specs to above, US$1,299 in white
  3. 2.16 GHz, 160 GB hard drive, otherwise identical to 2.16 GHz model, US$1,499 in black

Build-to-order options include 2 GB of RAM and larger hard drives. Other World Computing offers a 3 GB memory upgrade, which is not officially supported by Apple.

Intel-based Macs use a partitioning scheme known as GPT. Only Macintel models can boot from GPT hard drives. Both PowerPC and Intel Macs can boot from APM (Apple's old partitioning scheme) hard drives, which is the format you must use to create a universal boot drive in Leopard. Power PC Macs running any version of the Mac OS prior to 10.4.2 cannot mount GPT volumes. PowerPC Macs won't let you install OS X to a USB drive or choose it as your startup volume, although there is a work around for that.
