Life is too short to argue over operating systems. Does it really matter what you use as long as you are happy with it?
Perhaps I am getting old, or perhaps it’s the advancement of operating systems in recent years and the major shift to web-based services rather than individual apps for everything, but does what OS you use really matter and is it worth arguing with people about it?
Wind back 10 years, and I would happily jump into the latest flame war between fanboys, running down anything that wasn’t Apple. Yes, I know, a little naive of me.
Don’t get me wrong, I think macOS is the best OS around. However, that is my opinion and because it suits my needs. After a brief stint looking at Linux, I know it isn’t for me, but it doesn’t mean that Linux is rubbish.
Desktops and Notebooks
For the computer world, you have four main contenders: macOS, Windows, ChromeOS, and Linux. All have their own merits. All have their own fans.
I use macOS, my kids use ChromeOS, and my daughter used Linux prior to having her Chromebook. They cover our needs, and that is what matters.
However, if you can do everything in Linux or Windows and you are more comfortable in them, then good on you. You go for it. There is no wrong or right OS. All have niggles and imperfections.
For the portable world, you have three main contenders: Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. I was a firm iOS user until 18 months ago when I looked at my aging iPhone and wondered if I really did need such an expensive handset. I dipped into the Android world and found that I could do everything I needed (and more) with a handset that cost one-third of the price, and I have been happy with it ever since.
I included Windows Phone (Windows Mobile or Windows 10 whatever they want to call it) in the mobile contenders because even though it is pretty much dead in the water, I personally thought it was a good OS and platform with rock-solid hardware at a bargain price. My kids had them for a while, but the lack of major app support drove them to Android.
The next time you see a post about the latest version of an OS or one of those stupid iOS vs Android clickbait articles, just think before you delve in and stir up the hornet’s nest. Just because it isn’t for you doesn’t mean that it isn’t for someone else.
Leave it be. You use what you want and let others do the same. Peace and calm in the tech world.
