The M2 Max/M2 Ultra Mac Studio was released just over a year after the original, seemingly following its own trend in contrast to other Apple Silicon Macs. Dropping and shipping same day, June 5th 2023 was when it was announced. Retaining an identical exterior to the previous generation M1 Max / M1 Ultra Mac Studio, the differences are visually imperceptible. The M2 Max is a second generation 5nm chip to the first generation 5nm M1 silicon, providing better performance.
Kudos to Apple for providing a refresh despite a prior chip shortage, and seemingly longer refresh intervals for other devices at the time. The M2 Max/Ultra retain the same level of L1i/L1d cache as their predecessors, the same media engine accelerators, memory bandwidth, memory type, memory bus bandwidth, and chip fabrication size.
The 2023 Mac Studio continues the trend of “vampire video” (that’s where the video bites into system memory). The 2006 Mac mini was the first Mac in a long, long time to do this, and most Intel Macs with HD/UHD graphics do this as well. An Apple Silicon GPU shares the unified memory which the chip also uses as RAM for applications, changing the traditional views on CPU/GPU memory.

Accelerators & Upgrades
- It is not possible to upgrade the CPU or GPU configuration on an Apple Silicon-based Mac. It may be theoretically possible to soldier a new chip onto a logic board, but this has not been done yet, and has yet to be determined. Other components, such as storage modules have been successfully soldiered by enthusiasts.
