27″ Retina 5K iMac (Early 2019)

This was nearing the end of the line for the Intel iMacs altogether, and perhaps you’re thinking: doesn’t this have a T2 security chip since it’s from 2019? Rest assured, it doesn’t.

The appeal of the 2019 model 5K iMac is precisely about the jump-up to Intel Coffee lake, combined with the lack of a heavy-handed T2 chip. The additional 2 CPU cores offered by even the base i5 makes this less an “S” model year, as they make a dramatic leap forward in performance – but only the i9 has hyper threading.

All models are bumped up to 2666 MHz PC4-21300 DDR4 SDRAM, including the base model. According to Intel, all CPUs support a maximum of 128 GB of DDR4, although Apple allows the base model only to be configured up to 32 GB, the rest up to 64 GB. One interesting quirk about this model is how the first 2 options (base and one above it) use an 8th gen Intel CPU, but the other 2 (CTO/BTO plus the one just below it) use a 9th gen Intel CPU. Both CPU generations belong to Coffee Lake.

What You Need to Know

  • These iMacs still shipped with 8 GB of RAM in 2019 for the lowest configuration on all models. This is okay for basic tasks, but may become increasingly impractical as time goes on. For a serious speed boost, opt for at least 16 GB of RAM, and an SSD over the Fusion Drive or Hard Drive.
  • There are four memory slots on the logic board.
  • This iMac can use 8th and 9th gen Intel CPUs, socket FCLGA1151.
