Low End Mac Website Updates for 3/29

Hey everyone, and thank you for taking the time out of your day to visit Low End Mac. In light of developments on retooling the website, some solutions were found on fixing the website’s navigation along with other pages! It has been noted by visitors; some of the main pages weren’t working, remarking on broken links, missing images and a slowly decaying site. We’re in the process of working with the site master to make some necessary changes which editors cannot make. Those changes may take time since other work must be done, but I will do the most I can in my time with the tools available to me.

What’s new?

  • Tech Spec Pages: Tech spec page is revamped for ease of navigation. Hopefully is easier on the eyes. Search function now baked-in and cleaned up instead of a “well isn’t this embarrassing?” page.
    • The tech spec page still has the older way if navigating if you’re more used to/comfortable.
    • Tech spec pages now have a top-left routed square icon as a standard feature as a visual continuity element from the articles. Navigation buttons added to main index pages.
    • Tech spec categories such as “desktop, laptop.. etc;” are now clickable and expand into their own page.

  • Groups Page: Was previously missing or broken, is now populated by our active groups. This page may post updates to our groups or future plans/announcements.
    • Group rules from our Facebook group have been added to the page!

  • Software Page: Previously, the software page was a set of links pointing to other websites and resources. Old page was moved under a button so people can still access it. The software page now navigates to 4 pages:
    • Software Here at Low End Mac: Kickstarting our idea for a LEM software repository. Files allowable only up to 11.3 MB, but there is still a wide range of abandonware available up to that file size. Since users navigate to this site for it’s contents, more value can be added by harping on resourcefulness.
    • Wallpapers and Icons: Now you can download full resolution images of all the icons and wallpapers hosted on the website, including some of the custom art made by scratch.
    • Macintosh Garden: A link for people to discover/stumble into if they’ve never seen it.
    • Mac Software Links: Old navigation page archived for those wishing to access this page.
      .
  • Support LEM page: Added the rounded “Low End Mac” logo and the “see our different online groups” button for navigation.

These are not one-off changes as they’re done over time, but this is a collection of the most recent swathe of changes. Hopefully these changes makes the site easier to navigate, makes it easier on the eyes, and especially more organized! Please let us know if you have any feedback.

  1. Have the LEM groups been migrated away from google groups?
I started in the original Quadlist, joined many other groups, but most are low- or no-volume today, and LEMSwap was terminated by google.
Not on FaceBook or BlueSky, but io.groups work ok, many yahoo groups went there.

    • Not officially. I believe the site founder Dan Knight was the one who setup and maintains the google groups, something I don’t have access to. Can definitely reach out to him and see what he is willing to do. I’m trying to get r/LowEndMac back on reddit, and explore where people would congregate.
