Copyright laws protect work from being freely duplicated and redistributed which extend over to the makings of software and hardware wherever the law is unexpired. When the copyright holder no longer distributes the software, no longer enforces the copyright protections over their own depreciated software, or if the software is distributed but unsupported by the maker – this is called Abandonware.
Adobe Photoshop CS4 and the Photoshop CS4 in a classroom fall into this category as well. While the book can be purchased online and it may or may not come with the original CD lessons, this is not guaranteed. On the Macintosh Garden there is a zip file uploaded with all the original content to help get you started on learning how to use Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Adobe took down their activation servers for CS4, however it is possible to sill get CS4 going on a Mac without these activation servers. Once installed, this classroom software can help you get going with photoshop basics. There are 14 lesson folders with 2-3 lessons per folder, some other resources on the CD, and an instructor’s booklet that goes along with it.

By saving and preserving the contents of this once well-used teaching tool, we retain some of the bells and whistles that come with Photoshop. Now instead of just having a vintage app able to be installed on an older platform, others could effectively learn how to use it using the original distributions that came along.
