Even though this PowerBook is about to turn 20 this fall, what amazes me is how it’s able to handle some tasks to this day, in Mac OS X Leopard. The Radeon Mobility 9700 really pulls its own weight, making 360p YouTube streaming a bit more possible whilst simultaneously browsing the web. I’ve been enjoying having this Late 2005 15-Inch Hi-Res PowerBook G4 1.67 since picking it up in Late 2023.

Every now and again I like to hop on here, because it’s like a Power Mac G5 “lite”. It has all the same software as the Dual 2.0 Power Mac G5, it’s fun to make an exercise out of seeing what it can still do, while also side loading apps from the Macintosh Garden. Away from the noise of social media.. (it can’t run any of those sites anyway, except YouTube), notifications, and ads that now thankfully won’t load because the platform is too old when I use certain browsers on some websites.

Photoshop CS4 runs pretty nicely on here as well, and the ‘Book has ethernet+Bluetooth+USB in case I ever decide to dock the laptop and set it up with some peripherals. If I want to have an hours-long video streamed in WebKit in Sorbet Leopard on Youtube, it will hardly drop any frames.

In Conclusion
The FanXiang 1 TB SSD has been holding up quite well, and the new thermal paste also seems to be helping this PowerBook as well. The battery Lithium-Ion battery, despite being 21 years old, can miraculously hold a charge somewhat close to it’s original design capacity, and can function for multiple hours of mixed usage depending on what you do. Video streaming drains the battery much faster.
