Site graphics, our new banner, and.. one more thing.

Good Morning Everyone,

As Low End Mac continues to grow, we strive for it to still be useful and relevant even when contemporary computers look nothing like what they do in our website banner anymore. We’ve had a remarkable breadth of changes over the last year such as gaining multiple contributors, adding hundreds of articles, redesigning the website, and to have it all done with human labor.

Many visitors alike recount on how Low End Mac has been there for them over the years, or how it is useful, interesting, that they’re glad to see it still around, among many things. As our founder Daniel Knight recently says: “So happy to have so many keeping the vision alive!”, and our team shares the continued vision of keeping Low End Mac around for the long haul.

As readers and visitors have seen, our website has changed dramatically in appearance, adopting modernized design principles, being more.. Apple-like. It has come to my attention that the use of the San Francisco, SF Pro, SF Pro rounded and that family of fonts may land us in hot water. So for the sake of longevity, we are switching fonts. Now.

From Apple’s license agreement

“The grants set forth in this License do not permit you to, and you agree not to, install, use or run the Apple Font for the purpose of creating mock-ups of user interfaces to be used in software products running on any non-Apple operating system or to enable others to do so. You may not embed the Apple Font in any software programs or other products. Except as expressly provided for herein, you may not use the Apple Font to, create, develop, display or otherwise distribute any documentation, artwork, website content or any other work product.”

What it looks like

In a nutshell, I found as many replacements as possible to suit the needs of our website, as quickly as possible. The website banner is about the same as our recent change, and the font is a slight return to the font used a year ago. The Squircle and circle icons have been cleaned up as well, to give a more professional look. I now use three fonts when making graphics moving forward: Roboto Round, Open Runde, and Varela Round.

Cleanup

Now that we’re using open source fonts, Low End Mac is free to continue making artwork. Time is going to have to be spent to make sure all artwork made lines up with this. The good news is, nearly everything is saved as a .PSD so it’s relatively as simple as clicking buttons and re-uploading things. A new project.

From openfontlicense.org – If you use OFL fonts: “You can use them in books, posters, artwork, logos, and on websites, even make 3D objects with the outlines—no acknowledgement is required
You can bundle them in apps or software subject to certain conditions”.
