15 New software repository additions: August 11th

For a little while now, Low End Mac has maintained a small freeware/abandonware software repository to share with our readers and help get the most out of your Mac, where it makes the most sense for you.

Intro

Part of what makes any depreciating computer platform fun to play with (as well as usable) is to preserve apps, utilities, games, etc; as inevitably some software will fall through the cracks of time. As excited as I was brainstorming over the idea for our website, there are some hard truths:

There are multiple places for depreciated software, so what could Low End Mac offer?

Storage is a premium – selection must be curated. This means no OS ISOs, no archiving multiple versions of the same app, and other limitations.

After digging through my own collection of saved software over the years and checking around online, I noticed something: Some software & utilities I’ve downloaded over the years had disappeared entirely online, and some weren’t yet up on the Garden. I figured, why not upload it here?

Then.. I started uploading more things; community-supported web browsers, more common Mac utilities, etc; I like to make sure it’s at least not uploaded elsewhere before uploading here, but once it’s here, it’ll stay.

Copyright laws protect work from being freely duplicated and redistributed which extend over to the makings of software and hardware wherever the law is unexpired. When the copyright holder no longer distributes the software, no longer enforces the copyright protections over their own depreciated software, or if the software is distributed but unsupported by the maker – this is called Abandonware.

1: AJA-System-Test 2.1

A completely free app in the App store, now only supports macOS 10.13 or higher – but here’s one saved which runs on Mac OS X El Capitan!

2: AudioScore Lite-V6

AudioScore Lite is a free audio transcription program included with Sibelius Ultimate and Sibelius Artist. This is the version which works with Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

3: Blackmagic Disk Speed Test

Just like AJA system test, this app’s most modern iteration on the App store drops support for Macs running below macOS 10.13. This one archived works on Yosemite.
