Vintage computer collectors have seen it all too often: that familiar dirty yellow discoloration that develops after decades of exposure to light and air.
It’s the color of a computer that looks like it spent 30 years sitting next to a smoker, even if nobody ever smoked anywhere near it.
They weren’t made that way.
Apple’s familiar Platinum-colored plastics contain brominated flame-retardant additives. Over time, exposure to ultraviolet light and oxygen causes chemical changes in the plastic and those additives, producing the ugly yellow-brown color we see today.
For vintage Mac collectors, it’s one of the easiest signs that a computer has spent the last few decades aging rather less gracefully than they would have liked.
Getting the Yellow Out
There are several ways to restore yellowed plastic so it’s closer to its original color. The most common is some variation of the peroxide treatment commonly called “retrobrighting.”
This classic method involves making a witches’ brew of high concentration hydrogen peroxide and thickener, slathering it on the plastic, sealing everything in a clear bag, and exposing it to UV light. Don’t get the peroxide on your skin. Want to guess how I know that?
If you have the space outside in the sun, there’s another method I prefer. Dilute 1 part of 32% hydrogen peroxide with about 20 parts of water in a large, clear plastic tote and completely submerge the parts in the solution. Then cover the tote with plastic wrap and leave it out in the sun until the yellow gives up.
I live in Arizona, where sunlight is not so much a source of light as an angry natural resource.
Anyone here with unprotected light skin will get a sunburn in about 15 minutes. The desert sun doesn’t negotiate. It’s the boss. It also does a remarkably good job of helping to treat yellowed plastic. No need for UV lamps here, at least in the summer.
With reasonable precautions, the peroxide-and-sun method can produce excellent results. It’s my go to. But eventually there’s always a problem that retrobright methods can’t solve.
The Need for Paint
This happened to me recently in two different ways.
I had a missing part that could not be found anywhere, so I 3D printed it. There were also some damaged bits that needed bodywork before they could be put back into service. In both cases:
I needed paint, and not just any beige paint.
I wanted Apple Platinum.
My first stop was the old reliable, Home Depot. I wandered through the spray-paint aisle and eventually settled on Behr Lunar Surface in a matte finish. I took it home, painted a part, and… It was close. As in, “almost” close.
If the part had been sitting by itself on a shelf with nothing to compare it to, I probably would have called it good enough. Put it next to an actual vintage Mac, though, and the difference was obvious.
Google to the rescue.
The Search for Platinum

It turns out there has been a fair amount of discussion among vintage Mac collectors about which readily available paint comes closest to Apple’s Platinum color.
The general consensus is that none of the off-the-shelf paints are quite right, although several got close.
That matched my experience.
I dug deeper and eventually found a discussion on the 68kMLA forum about the subject. Several off-the-shelf paints were suggested, including another one I tried — without success. The discussion eventually settled on a custom color: RAL 7044.
RAL 7044 is a standardized color called Silk Grey. In the right finish, it turns out to be remarkably close to Apple’s Platinum. I searched the usual places. Not for sale on Amazon, but listed on eBay… in gloss. Apple’s Platinum plastic has a very low sheen, close to a near-matte finish. A shiny Mac is generally a sign that somebody has been polishing it with something they found in their garage. No go on the eBay one.
So I kept looking.
After spending far too many hours searching online, I finally found Crosslink Paints in Dallas, Texas. They offered a custom-mixed RAL 7044 in a matte finish in 12-ounce aerosol cans. And at a price that wouldn’t bankrupt me or require me to get enough to repaint Cupertino. I ordered a few of them. This article isn’t sponsored by anyone. I paid for the paint myself, so I needed a good price.
Crosslink shipped the next day. Since paint can only travel by ground, a little less than a week later my cans of Platinum-adjacent goodness arrived.
Testing… 1 2 3
The first thing I painted was a small 3D-printed part that I had already tried to make look good with a few Home Depot acquisitions. After a little preparation, I gave it two coats of the RAL 7044. The difference was immediately obvious.
Once the paint had dried enough for me to carry the part inside, I put it next to several of my vintage Macs and took a good look. It was closer than I expected. The tricky thing about matching vintage Apple plastic is that there isn’t really one single color to match.
Thirty-year-old Macs come in a spectrum of beige and grayish beige depending on their history. Some have yellowed more than others. Others have been retrobrighted. A few have been sitting in dark closets since the Clinton administration. Even two machines that started out the same color won’t look exactly the same today.
The RAL 7044 fell right into the window of: “Yeah. That’s pretty damn close.”
And that’s what I was looking for.
Matching the Texture
Color was only half the problem.
Apple’s plastic isn’t smooth. There is a subtle texture to the surface, and a freshly painted smooth 3D-printed part can look wrong even when the color is right.
I experimented with several ways of reproducing that texture.
The best one involved going back to Home Depot and finding a textured white spray paint. It produced more of a sandy texture than Apple’s original finish, but it worked surprisingly well as a foundation.
The process became:
- Texture coat
- High-build primer
- (Very) Light sanding with 2000+ grit paper
- Two (or more) coats of RAL 7044
The result was surprisingly convincing. Not factory-perfect, but certainly good enough that the replacement part didn’t immediately announce itself as a 3D-printed impostor.
The WorkGroup Server 9650 Bezel
My next test was considerably larger: a floppy-drive bezel I printed for a WorkGroup Server 9650. I made it in gray resin, then sanded it and fitted it to my new-to-me server. After that came the treatment: texture coat, primer, light sanding, and finally the RAL 7044 paint.
It took a few “final” coats. You know the kind. The coat that is supposed to be the final coat, followed by the final-final coat, followed by the OK, THIS IS ACTUALLY THE FINAL COAT coat. You can probably tell I’m no professional painter. Eventually, I was satisfied. The new bezel is an extremely close match to the rest of the machine. It would be even better if I had already retrobrighted the original plastics, but that’s the next step for the machine.
The Big Test: A Quadra 950
Then came the real test. I have a Quadra 950 case that needed considerably more than a little touch up. The inside suffered from a leaking battery, while the outside had worn paint and needed some bodywork.
Quadra 900-series cases are a little different from other vintage Macs. The main part of the case was painted at the factory with a conductive metallic coating on the inside for RF shielding and a color coat on the outside. Mine needed both redone. After thoroughly cleaning the case and roughing up the surfaces with fine sandpaper, I masked off the exterior and re-coated the inside with nickel conductive paint from MG Chemicals. It wasn’t cheap. After spending that much money on the inside, there was absolutely no going back.
Once the conductive coating had cured, I masked the interior and turned my attention to the outside. The RAL 7044 went on beautifully. I used almost two cans for the number of coats I applied, although that was largely my own fault. I was being somewhat… enthusiastic.
In the end I was lucky and the result was worth it. The color is extremely close to the original finish. In fact, it’s close enough that I decided to go one step further. I body-worked some cracked drive bezels for the machine and painted those too. Everything now matches.
Once the paint has fully cured, which can take several weeks depending on conditions, I’ll do a little final cleanup and fix the areas where a few bits of dust managed to find their way into the finish… because apparently dust has a personal grudge against freshly painted vintage Macs. And because I live in Arizona. When it’s finished, the 950 will look as close to factory-new as a 30-plus-year-old computer reasonably should.
Final Thoughts
For most vintage Mac restorations, peroxide, water, and sunlight are still the easiest way to improve the appearance of yellowed plastic. Still, retrobright can’t fix missing plastic, damaged parts, or something that needs to be completely rebuilt. That’s where paint comes in.
After trying several off-the-shelf colors, RAL 7044 in a matte finish is now my go-to choice for Apple’s Platinum-colored machines. It isn’t a magic formula, and the color of individual Macs varies depending on their age, exposure and subsequent treatments; but it’s remarkably close.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that matching the color is only part of the job. Surface preparation, texture, primer, paint thickness, and finish all matter. And, of course, patience. Which I never have enough of.
When it all came together, the results were worth it. There’s something particularly satisfying about taking a yellowed, cracked, damaged piece of 30-year-old plastic, repairing it, giving it the right texture and color, and putting it back on a machine where it looks like it belongs.
…even if the computer is booting System 7 from a BlueSCSI and has more modern storage than Apple could have ever imagined.
