On March 6th 2014, Apple released Mac OS X 10.9.3 Mavericks Beta, which included built-in support for several new display options at the time: 4K displays can now have a “retina” resolution, and now there’s an option to enable 60 Hz. Prior to this update, 4K support was spotty.

This means if you have a first or second-generation Mac Pro, it’s quite possible to drive a 4K 60 Hz display, provided you’re on the right version of OS X with the right GPU, cable, and display.
What sparked the idea?
In continuation of building a “maximal, but in OS X” Mac Pro 2,1 as a companion computer/nostalgia project, I wanted to see how far this Mac can go – display resolution included. That and the 30 Hz refresh rate showing up over the DVI > HDMI cable wasn’t cutting it.. it felt choppy and slow compared to the 4K60 output on the M4 Mac mini.
If I’m to use this everyday and feel comfortable with it versus just writing one-off articles about potential upgrades, I feel like I’d eventually reach a point where I start bargaining with myself about it’s limitations vs. benefits. I used this computer long ago for a long time, technology has shifted a lot, my daily driver is Apple Silicon.. is it possible a 4K60 display could change how this Mac is perceived?
Dollar for dollar, you get more “bang for your buck” relative to computer monitors – especially now that 4K displays have been out for more than just a few years. As of 2026, you can purchase a new 4K Insignia TV at Best Buy for a mere $139, or other TVs between $150 – 300 – prices went down since I got mine on sale years ago.

Troubleshooting the adapter
4K60 didn’t show up right away with this adapter, but it wasn’t clear why I was limited to 30 Hz. I decided to check things out in terminal to attempt to figure out what was going on. Ultimately what fixed it was shutting the computer down, not using it for a little while, then powering it back up. No software updates.
Earlier when I was using a DVI to HDMI cable, I was able to get 4K30. Since this was a rather simple display cable and not any sort of active adapter, OS X would initialize the display earlier in the boot sequence. With this new cable, perhaps the active adapter or even the length of cabling is causing transient link or data-integrity problems. In any case, I now know 4K60 works on here, and can opt for something better. The display now initializes on login screen.
The Result
I never thought I’d see 4K60 display being powered by a first or second-generation Mac Pro, but it turns out this Mac is far more than capable. 4K60 is gargantuan by 2007 standards, but we’re not streaming or capturing 2 GB/s of bandwidth constantly over PCIe, since the framebuffer comes from the GTX 980.. plus this card has 224 GB/s of local VRAM bandwidth. Not only does it use less than 1% of the GPU’s bandwidth, all we’re doing is rendering a GUI

Using a Mac Pro 2,1 in 2026 on a 4K60 display feels refreshingly modern. Everything feels more responsive in a way I’m not used to attributing to this specific model.. granted there are upgrades which got it here. If this is how responsive this Mac feels off a 288 MB/s R/W OWC Mercury Accelsior PCIe blade-style SSD + El Cap + GTX 980 + 4K60 display.. I can only imagine how responsive it would appear once Sata III becomes bootable on here.
With so much screen real-estate, now I have a solid combo-Mac sitting side-by-side to the M4 Mac Mini: A massive library of deprecated intel Apps, another Mac to do effective article writing with, run many sorts of 2010s Mac games which normally wouldn’t run on an older GPU (most at lower resolutions of course!), effective multitasking, virtualize many OSes, jam lots of drives in for storage, and overall have a fun build to tinker with. What drew me to the 2,1 in 2015 was it’s upgradability, but what grew on me was the stability of this Mac. I gave mine away in 2019, and now in 2026 I’m back to rebuilding one. After switching to a 4K display for productivity in 2025, I’m not looking back.
