In continuation of the site updates posted before, we will continue covering changes in the form of periodic posts whether they’re big or small. We want our readers to see the changes done to the site, many small ones can be time consuming and hard to notice.

This article reflects site updates for the week of August 9th, 2026.

1: Site migration is complete

Thank you everyone for sticking through the trials and errors, and for anyone reaching out with tips/suggestions. Initially there were issues with the site theme, some articles were missing, and other elements were entirely out of place. Fortunately everything appears to be resolved, and the focus can shift back to content creation + tweaking the site. This was also a chance to make much needed backend changes.

2: New site banner

Site banner refreshed to reflect the latest crop of article thumbnails, and for an updated, cleaner look.

3: A more secure Low End Mac

Having a website which stands the test of time as a community resource means patching any backdoors & security vulnerabilities, strengthening the firewall, upgrading software, and having responsive site monitoring.

We also want our readers to interact, and comment on our website without any sort-of ambiguity as to if or how. So, we streamlined our user accounts database for everyone to have the best experience.

• All spam/bot “Subscriber/participant” accounts deleted
• A more responsive monitoring system.
• Users may now enable 2-factor authentication for login

Some more site improvements:

• Automatic updates implemented to patch software vulnerabilities faster

• Old and deactivated plugins removed
  .
• Per-page-load calculations lessened by unchecking the “automatically close comments on old posts”, resulting in a more responsive website. (Thank you Dave H.!)

• New fixes maintain a commitment to being low-resource website by keeping Javascript and widgets mostly or entirely out. You can visit LEM on many devices this way.

4: User Interface updates

4A: Our home page now features the lemOS page toolbar. You may now switch between “icon view” for a more tablet/smartphone-friendly Home Screen page, and the actual home page. There’s also an immediate “?” Help page to assist readers and visitors alike in using the page toolbar.

4C: Column View idea test: The work in progress is an idea that stalled while I became more preoccupied with the site migration and other aspects of the site. I’ve been toying with the idea of adding a column view to navigate tech specs, sort-of like how Finder has column view. This is what it looks like when you try using it right now, it’s very incomplete and is only a proof of concept.

4D: Site Navigation toolbar fixed

Up until the site migration, the software combined with site theme made it seemingly impossible to make meaningful changes to the site toolbar. While some changes were made using clever tricks, the Low End Mac site navigation toolbar remained entirely unchanged until just a few weeks ago.

• Articles – Now takes you to “Articles by year”, so you may easily find what you’re looking for.
• Hardware Tech Specs – Same button as before, with updated verbiage
• Software Index – Same button as before, with updated verbiage
• Our Groups – Same button as before, with updated verbiage
• About The Team – Same button as before, with updated verbiage (This page needs updating)..
• Support LEM – Now takes you to our Ko-Fi page!
• Removed : Login – to reduce vectors of spam/login attempts by funneling them into the Home Screen page. It now takes a few extra steps versus just loading the website to the homepage.
