After 1-1/2 years on the market, the second generation Apple TV was replaced by the third generation, which looks exactly the same.
The third generation Apple TV was the first to stream 1080p video. It can access the iTunes Store directly and stream rented content from the iTunes Store. It also supports AirPlay and can mirror the display of any Mac running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion or later.
Where the 2G Apple TV uses a 1 GHz Apple A4 CPU and 256 MB of memory, the 3G Apple TV has a 1 GHz single-core A5 and 512 MB of memory.
Apple sold 2.7 million units in 2012 and approximately 6 million by January 1, 2013.
