The 6G iPod touch is the first 64-bit iPod touch, following the iPhone 5S, 6, and 6 Plus in leaving behind 32-bit operation. It is also the first iPod touch with a 128 GB configuration, which is only available directly from Apple.

The 6G is the first iPod touch to run at over 1 GHz and the first with 1 GB of system memory, which gives it a speed advantage over its predecessors, and its 802.11ac WiFi provides even more bandwidth than earlier models. Internally, it shares more with the iPhone 6 than the 5S.

The screen and dimensions are the same as in the 5G iPod touch, a bit of a disappointment to those who had been hoping for a larger display.

The 6G iPod touch is the oldest one to support iOS 10.3.
