Spec for spec, the 1.2 GHz 12″ iBook G4 matches the 1 GHz 12″ model it replaces with one change: a nominally 20% faster CPU, although in reality the Early 2004 model runs at 1.07 GHz, making the Late 2004 model only 12% faster.

AirPort Extreme 802.11g WiFi is now standard, and the retail price is $100 lower than model introduced just six months ago. With a $999 retail price, it sold well.

The 1.2 GHz 12″ iBook G4 also compares very nicely with the $1,599 1.33 GHz 12″ PowerBook G4 – 90% of the speed and a smaller hard drive at 63% as much money. This iBook is a great value! (The PowerBook has an aluminum case, making it a bit smaller and lighter, and it also has a better keyboard.)

Cautions

• Portable Computers: Models Which Do Not Have a Backup Battery notes the iBook has no backup battery to retain time and other settings when the main battery is removed. A small capacitor holds enough energy to maintain PRAM contents for 20 seconds, so switch batteries quickly.
