With the new M5 chip quietly added to the entry-level 14-Inch MacBook Pro, it showed up alongside the M5 iPad Pro on Apple’s website, and the M5 Vision Pro. It comes as no surprise the chip has the greatest Single Core performance score of any Mac up until this point, further raising the bar.
On the outside, the 14-Inch M5 MacBook Pro looks the same as the outgoing M4 model. Memory bandwidth is increased to 153 GB/s from the M4’s 120 GB/s. The GPU now has a neural accelerator in each core, to help GPU-based AI workloads run much faster than before.
.
Even faster graphics
In addition to a neural accelerator in each core, it bumps the GPU core count up from M4’s 8, to 10 on the M5.
From Apple’s press release: “Built using third-generation 3-nanometer technology, M5 introduces a next-generation 10-core GPU architecture with a Neural Accelerator in each core, enabling GPU-based AI workloads to run dramatically faster, with over 4x the peak GPU compute performance compared to M4.1 The GPU also offers enhanced graphics capabilities and third-generation ray tracing that combined deliver a graphics performance that is up to 45 percent higher than M4.”
.
Almost two M1 Chip’s worth of performance – all in one.
While 177% more isn’t 200%, it’s so close, it’s astounding how far Apple Silicon has come in the last 5 years. Mind you, this is comparing an M5 iPad Pro to a 13-Inch M1 MacBook Pro. Artificial benchmarks are a proverbial “maximum wear pressure test” for computers and smartphones alike, but can provide valuable insight nonetheless.

Apple Intelligence
macOS Sequoia and later supports Apple intelligence on any Mac with Apple Silicon. This feature is also available on most iPads with an M-chip, as well as iOS devices running 18 and later with an A17 Pro chip or better (iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, or all iPhone 16 models+). The M5 MacBook Pro is poised to be the next leap in AI-related tasks on Apple Silicon.
- From Apple’s press release: “And now with M5, the new 14-inch MacBook Pro and iPad Pro benefit from dramatically accelerated processing for AI-driven workflows, such as running diffusion models in apps like Draw Things, or running large language models locally using platforms like webAI.”
.
What You Need to Know
- If you’re someone who’s transitioning over from an Intel Mac, or will be using Intel Mac apps, Apple has an app called Rosetta 2 for Apple Silicon Macs. Once installed, this isn’t something you directly interact with. Rather, you may simply open an Intel app, and it’ll open. Rosetta 2 does an Intel to Arm “ahead of time” translation, using an instruction set in the M4 chip. The first time the Intel app launches it’ll be noticeably slow, as Rosetta caches and stores code. Once this process is done, the App should work just as normal.
. - Only the 14-Inch MacBook Pro has the M5 chip as of right now.
.
Closed Lid Mode: All ‘Books support “lid closed” (or clamshell) mode, which leaves the built-in display off and dedicates all video RAM to an external display or two. To use closed lid mode, your ‘Book must be plugged into the AC adapter and connected to an external display and a USB or Bluetooth mouse and keyboard (you might also want to consider external speakers). Power up your ‘Book until the desktop appears on the external display and then close the lid. Your ‘Book will go to sleep, but you can wake it by moving the mouse or using the keyboard. The built-in display will remain off, and the external monitor will become your only display.
To resume use of the internal display, you need to disconnect the external display, put the computer to sleep, and then open the lid. This will wake up your ‘Book and restore use of the built-in display.
