New macOS update this week: Sequoia 15.5 brings minor improvements

After spending roughly a month and a half in beta, macOS 15.5 Sequoia is now available for everyone to download who is currently already on macOS 15 as well as anyone wishing up upgrade with a supported or OCLP capable Mac.

Keep in mind if you’re running an unsupported Mac with Sequoia on OCLP, the patcher app will notice if anything gets overwritten for a minor update and will prompt you to reinstall the patches.

If the update however is more substantive and breaks patches which allowed the unsupported OS to run in a prior OS version/configuration. For this reason, it’s recommended you backup your information in the event you’d need to do a clean system reinstall. In any case when you know you have a mission-critical device whether it’s low end or not, always make a plan to save your information asa failsafe.

  • How to download: Go to System Settings > General > Software Updates > macOS Sequoia (3.92 GB download) Build 24F74, same on Intel Macs as it is on Apple Silicon Macs.

What’s been fixed?

You never know what’s contained in an update for your Mac just around the corner, or what kinds of unforeseen vulnerabilities and glitches which may be found in the future. That being said, this update comes with a few iterations and fixes an important issue on a couple newer Macs.

  • Previously if you customized your display calibration using the Pro Display Calibrator on your 14 or 16-Inch M4 MacBook Pro, it would boot-loop. It’s unclear how long this remained an issue or for how many builds this persisted in, but it is noted on the RC release notes.
    .
  • A Finder glitch was fixed where if you had alot of stuff stored on a network drive, it would incorrectly calculate how much data was actually stored in there (ex; shows 454 GB used instead of 300 GB, etc;)
    .
  • A Storekit, an hvf C API and a Service Management bug were fixed.
    .
  • If a screen time passcode is entered on a child’s device/parental managed device, the parents will now receive a notification.

New Features?

They are few and far between this time around. As Apple prepares for WWDC 2025, macOS Sequoia starts to wrap up its development lifecycle. Of course there may be future releases and security fixes which may prompt changes, but anything that gets pushed out is overwhelmingly unlikely to change the OS as we know it.

  • Just like in iOS: In the mail app, you can now turn on/off contact photos.
    • This is a setting which came in macOS 15.4 when Apple introduced mail categorization, however this setting was hidden in settings.
      .
  • Another mail category: All Mail
    .
  • In: Settings > AppleCare > Warranty, there is a new design. the top part of the page is more standardized and looks more in line with how system settings works, looks like a banner just like in iOS.
    .
  • System Settings gains a search history list to give you quick access to recently visited .prefpanes.
    .
  • Resolves a minor glitch which causes external USB/pointing devices to not work properly.
    .
  • There was a glitch in 24F5042g (15.5 beta) that’s been fixed: System Settings > Wallpaper: If you select a custom background color using the color picker, it will always make the wallpaper white no matter what.
    .
  • Apple Intelligence background downloading glitches from macOS 15.4 fixed. When setting up a new Mac on 15.4, Apple Intelligence may present itself as being on/available before actually being fully on the Mac.
    .
  • Fixed VPN connectivity issues for 3rd party browsers.
    .
  • Safari Web Push notification update (See more on MacRumors)
