Q. I just downloaded Macster 1.0 PR5. Whenever I try to run
it on my iMac running OS 8.5, I get error 1,001. How do you fix
this? Also, do you know of any add-on programs and helpful pointers
to give me?
A. Many people have been using this program faithfully ever
since it started a few months ago, however now, many people cant
use it. This is because the newest version of Macster (which is 1.0
preview 5) is incompatible with the iMac running OS 8.5, but this
can be fixed.
First, make sure you have Carbon Lib 1.0.4 installed. You can
get it
here. CarbonLib lets "Carbonized" programs, such as Macster,
run. "Carbonizing" a program makes it more compatible, as well as
much more crash free.
Next, upgrade your computer. Macster, for some odd reason, is
incompatible with OS 8.5. All you need to do is upgrade to 8.6 or
higher. Upgrading to 8.6 is free. You can get the update from
Apple's site.
Once you've update, Macster should run without a hitch.
Also, with version 1.0 PR5, there are some third party
add-ons.
The first one is iNapNow Mod for Macster PR5. It lets your
computer access other Macster servers, called OpenNap servers. This
allows you to search for more files - and if Napster is ever shut
down, these servers will still be running. You can get it at
<http://www.new-wave.net/MacsterPR5OpenNap.sit.hqx>.
There are other add-ons for Macster. However, the other ones are
all tools for not so nice purposes. (As if stealing music is nice
to begin with.) You'll have to find these programs on your own.
Lastly, few tips about Macster:
- Whenever your about to download a file, don't pay attention to
the line speed. Most of the time you don't need to worry about it.
Instead, focus on the Ping area. The lower the Ping, the faster the
download.
- Also, when you're about to search for files, never type the
whole name. If your looking for Jermaine Dupri's "Money Ain't A
Thing," type in "Dupri" and "Money." This will yield more results,
because the file your looking for may not have all of those
keywords.
In the end, with these helpful hints, your music experience
should be great.
