AT&T iPhone 3G Service to Cost $10-15 More Every Month

iPod Observer's John Martellaro reports:

"For the original iPhone 2G, for the majority of those who paid $399 for an 8 GB model, the monthly plan for 450 minutes was $39.99/mo for the voice service and $20/mo for the unlimited data plan That also included 200 text messages. The total outlay, not including taxes, has been: $59.99. Over 24 months, that's about $1,476, including the $36 activation fee you paid.

"For the iPhone 3G, on the same 450 minutes plan, the bundled price of voice and unlimited data rises to $69.99. However to get those 200 text messages back will cost an extra $5/month. The total outlay is $74.99 over 24 months, or just under $1800.00."

AT&T Announces iPhone 3G Pricing

PR: Online resources available to help customers prepare for purchase.

Variety of plans combine voice and unlimited data

AT&T Inc. has announced iPhone 3G pricing for new and existing AT&T customers, several attractive voice and data plans, and tips on how to be "iReady" when iPhone 3G goes on sale at AT&T retail stores at 8 a.m. local time on Friday, July 11.

"We can't wait to offer iPhone 3G to our customers, and we want to make sure the buying process is as easy as possible," said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO of AT&T's wireless unit. "Considering all the great new features of iPhone 3G, we think our pricing and monthly plans present a tremendous value for consumers and businesses alike."

Pricing and Eligibility

AT&T is making it easy for customers to prepare for their iPhone 3G purchase by posting "Get iReady" tips and frequently asked questions at www.att.com/iphone. The site also will include a link for customers to check their upgrade eligibility and other wireless account information.

iPhone 3G will be available for $199 for the 8 GB model and $299 for the 16 GB model. These prices require two-year contracts and are available to the following customers:

iPhone customers who purchased before July 11

Customers activating a new line with AT&T

Current AT&T customers who are eligible, at the time of purchase, for an upgrade discount

Existing AT&T customers who are not currently eligible for an upgrade discount can purchase iPhone 3G for $399 for the 8 GB model or $499 for the 16 GB model. Both options require a new two-year service agreement. In the future, AT&T will offer a no-contract-required option for $599 (8 GB) or $699 (16 GB).

Current customers may also choose to wait until they become eligible for an upgrade discount. Eligibility is generally determined by amount of time remaining on a current contract and payment history.

Current AT&T customers who are upgrading to iPhone 3G will pay an $18 upgrade fee and new AT&T customers will pay the standard $36 activation fee.

Voice, Data and Text Messaging Plans

AT&T brings iPhone 3G customers the best coverage on the globe and the largest mobile-to-mobile calling community with unlimited calling to AT&T's 71.4 million wireless customers. iPhone 3G customers can choose from four individual AT&T Nation plans, which bundle voice and unlimited data (e-mail and Web browsing).

  • AT&T NationSM Unlimited: Includes unlimited Anytime Minutes for $129.99 a month.
  • AT&T Nation 1350: Includes 1350 Anytime Minutes and unlimited Night & Weekend Minutes for $109.99 a month.
  • AT&T Nation 900: Includes 900 Anytime Minutes and unlimited Night & Weekend Minutes for $89.99 a month.
  • AT&T Nation 450: Includes 450 Anytime Minutes and 5,000 Night & Weekend Minutes for $69.99 a month.

All AT&T Nation and AT&T FamilyTalk® plans for iPhone 3G include nationwide long distance and roaming, Visual Voicemail, Rollover®, unlimited Mobile to Mobile calling, Call Forwarding, Call Waiting, Three-Way Calling and Caller ID.

AT&T will offer FamilyTalk plans, with bundled voice and unlimited data, starting as low as $129.99 a month for two iPhone 3G lines. Up to three additional iPhone lines can be added for $39.99 each.

Unlimited text messaging can be added for an additional $20 ($30 for FamilyTalk plans of up to five lines); $15 (1,500 messages), or $5 (200 messages).

iPhone for Business

Business customers interested in iPhone 3G should contact an AT&T business sales representative or review their account information online to determine their eligibility for upgrade pricing. Corporate e-mail and other business applications require the Enterprise Data Plan for iPhone, which is $45 a month and bundled with an eligible voice plan. Small business customers may qualify for AT&T BusinessTalk, the industry's only shared plan specifically for small businesses. Additional details on iPhone business offerings are available at www.att.com/iphoneforbusiness.

iPhone 2.0 Software

All iPhone customers will benefit from the iPhone 2.0 software, which will be preloaded on all iPhone 3Gs and available as a free download for current iPhone customers. The new software will include numerous enhancements, such as business-class e-mail access via Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync; the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK), which allows a business to easily create applications customized to its needs; and the App Store, which offers a wide-range of applications - from games to business, education to entertainment and productivity to social networking. For example, AT&T has developed YELLOWPAGES.COM Mobile for iPhone, which takes local mobile search to a new level by allowing users to discover businesses and local events based on their popularity among other iPhone users, get directions and access business reviews.

Canadian iPhone 3G Service Plans Require 3-Year Contract

InformationWeek's Marin Perez reports:

"Canadian wireless customers learned how much it will cost to use the upcoming iPhone 3G as Rogers Wireless unveiled a variety of voice and data pricing plans.

"The plans range from $60 to $115, will require a three-year contract, and Rogers did not say how much the handset will cost when it arrives July 11."

Rogers iPhone: Get a Second Mortgage

Blogger Mathew Ingram says:

"Whoever leaked the supposed memo with Rogers' pricing for the Canadian iPhone played a cruel joke on their fellow Canucks: instead of the much-hoped-for $30 unlimited data plan - like AT&T users in the US have - we get a series of plans that start at twice that amount, and the cheapest plan comes with a pathetic 400 megabytes of data and a paltry 75 text messages. If you want 200 text messages (which many US plans come with) and a gigabyte of data per month, you have to spend a whopping $100 - oh yeah, and that's without the ridiculous 'system access fee' that gets tacked on, and call display is extra too."

Analyzing 7 iPhone Disappointments

iPod Observer's John Martellaro says:

"Technical journalist Brian Caulfield said he had seven disappointments with the iPhone: the cost, no Adobe Flash support, no replaceable batteries, no video recording, no cut and paste, no MMS and no voice dialing. Alex Zaharov-Reutt couldn't resist examining each item one by one on Tuesday.

"Of course, the cost of owning an iPhone 3G is going to go up because the data plan and SMS plans get more expensive. However, that's the cost of building a 3G network, according to Mr. Zaharov-Reutt, not something that Apple failed to deliver."

Long Fingernails and iPhone Typing Don't Mix - or Do They?

Macworld's Dan Moren says:

"The iPhone's touchscreen keyboard has been contentious since the phone's announcement a year and a half ago. While many have adjusted to the lack of physical keys, one demographic is still taking issue with the touch-sensitive input method: those with long fingernails.

"We're not just talking Freddy Krueger or Sabretooth here, either. Some women with longer fingernails are accusing Apple of misogyny because the input method does not work well for them. A post at the LA Times's Technology blog cites the example of a 39 year old consultant and lecturer who has fingernails between a quarter and an eighth of an inch long and says that she has difficulty typing on her iPhone."

Apple Developing an iPhone with a Keyboard?

The Register's Guy Kewney reports:

"It is an article of faith, of course, that whatever Steve Jobs does is right. And so, since the iPhone currently has no keyboard on it, it must logically follow that it is wrong to have a keyboard, and therefore that Steve Jobs will never produce a version that does have a keyboard.

"Fervent fans can therefore see no reason to change the iPhone from its current 'type on the touch screen, or not at all' design. As one of the more zealous remarked when the suggestion was even mentioned: 'The only people who think it needs a keyboard are people who have never used it.'

"Rumours from inside Cupertino suggest that Jobs himself doesn't have this sort of religious hangup about his own work. Reports from inside mobile operators show that whether or not he ever makes it work, he is already trying to make a 'slide-out' keyboard for a corporate version of the iPhone."

An iPhone with a Physical Keyboard? I Hope Not

VentureBeat's MG Siegler says:

"While the iPhone 3G (launching next Friday) has eliminated two major complaints about the original iPhone: lack of 3G network support and lack of GPS, other complaints are rising up. One, which has also been around since the device's inception, is its lack of a physical keyboard. With the iPhone 3G now squarely aimed at business users as well as consumers, with features such as Microsoft Exchange support, these complaints are being amplified.

"Apple may be listening, too. The company is currently working on prototypes for an iPhone with a physical keyboard, according to a new report from The Register. Such a version would not be out until next year, but the report claims some versions already exist and are nearly functional.

"I don't know about this one."

Atom-powered iPhone, the Sequel

Apple 2.0's Philip Elmer-DeWitt says:

"Remember the fuss stirred up last month when an Intel exec talked about a future iPhone that would be powered by one of Intel's Atom chips? (See Anatomy of a Rumor: The Atom-powered Newton iPhone.)

"What gave the rumor legs - and generated more than a dozen headlines on Techmeme - was the kind of iPhone that the Atom was alleged to be powering: a mini-tablet device like the ill-fated Apple Newton.

"Well, the story is back, but this time in a form that makes more sense - and may shed light on what that Intel exec was really talking about in May."

Future iPhone to Be Powered by Intel's Atom Chip?

Barrons' Eric Savitz reports:

"The next generation of the Apple iPhone - by which I mean, not the 3G iPhone due on July 11, but the version after that - will be powered by a version of Intel's new Atom family of low-cost, low-power processors, according to JoAnne Feeney, an analyst with FTN Midwest.

"In a research note this morning, she writes that the Atom-powered iPhone may arrive sometime in 2009 or 2010."

Mercedes Gear Integrates iPhone

Cars.com's Stephen Markley says:

"iPhone owners rejoice!

"As if it weren't already clear that your does-everything-but-actually-serve-as-a-kitchen-sink device is on its way to complete world domination, Mercedes-Benz has introduced a fancy piece of tech that integrates the iPhone into a cradle between the driver and passenger seats."

The function of the feature is directly in the name - uconnect phone, uconnect tunes, uconnect gps, uconnect studios and uconnect web.

"We set out to connect customers to the things that matter most to them," said Deborah Meyer, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer - Chrysler LLC. "The role for 'uconnect' in the 2009 model year places the focus on the customer experience and how the features will make their life easier."

New for 2009, the handsfree system automatically downloads up to 1,000 phone book entries from supported phones. The system also recognizes three languages, and is capable of learning. Voice commands can manage onboard phone book entries, select radio stations and access voice mail. Voice memos can be recorded using the microphone that's integrated within the rearview mirror. Three memos of up to thirty seconds each can be stored in the system. The handsfree option promotes safety, freedom, value and flexibility.

Part of uconnect phone on select Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles is an iPod interface, which allows an iPod to be plugged into the vehicle's sound system to play music through the vehicle's speakers, charge/recharge the iPod when the ignition is on, display artists and music choices on the radio and pause play when uconnect phone receives a phone call. The iPod can be controlled through the radio controls and the remote steering wheel switches (if equipped). The system uses a Universal Customer Interface (UCI) connector located either in the glove box or in the center console, depending on vehicle model.

uconnect tunes

What it does: uconnect tunes includes the following features for music, movie and personalized picture display:

  • A 30-gigabyte hard drive for ripping up to 6,700 songs from CD or USB memory devices in compressed format (either MP3, AAC or WMA file formats)

The systems can be bundled or opted for independently depending upon model availability, and either can be operated from the rear-seat entertainment unit or from the radio head unit.

Chrysler's uconnect studios offer optional SIRIUS Satellite Radio which provides more than 130 channels, including 69 channels of 100 percent commercial-free music, plus sports, news, talk and entertainment. Station selection with the radio is easy, using the same familiar method as choosing an AM or FM station. Consumers are able to scan channels or have preset buttons for their favorite channels. They can also search both by music category and channel, which is displayed on the radio screen

Availability: SIRIUS Satellite Radio is available on all Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles

Chrysler's uconnect studios offer optional SIRIUS Backseat TV which features three channels of family TV programming: Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network. SIRIUS Backseat TV operates via an in-vehicle satellite video receiver and two small roof-mounted antennas. Programming is displayed on the vehicle's second- and/or third-row video screens, and channel name, program title and rating is broadcasted and displayed on the screen. In addition, when the vehicle is in Park, programming can be displayed on the uconnect tunes or uconnect gps screen for front-seat viewing (as permitted by state regulations). Availability: Chrysler plans to offer aftermarket in-vehicle "hot-spot" wireless Internet capability through Mopar for Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles.

Innotech Announces Accenda Voice Control for iPod

PR: Innotech Systems, developer of voice interactive and remote control products, today announced the Accenda Voice Control for iPod. The revolutionary device adds handsfree voice operation to the popular Apple iPod family of products.

With the Accenda Voice Control for iPod, owners of iPod media players can adjust the volume, play a song, stop play, go to the next track, go to the previous track, or replay a song... all without lifting a finger.

In short, all the things you'd want to do while working, exercising, or just sitting in an easy chair.

Users merely plug their existing earbuds or headphones into the Accenda Voice Control for iPod, plug its cable into the iPod dock connector, and the unit is ready for immediate use. No set up is required. The tiny (12") Accenda Voice Control for iPod may be hung around the user's neck or clipped to a lapel, and is powered by the iPod media player itself.

"The iPod click wheel is a brilliant design, but is not convenient if you are wearing gloves, your iPod player is in a pocket, you don't have a free hand, or you can't see the display," said Len Novara, president of Innotech Systems. "By providing handsfree operation, the Accenda Voice Control for iPod makes a great product even greater. We expect it to be one of the most useful iPod accessories ever introduced."

Once connected to the iPod media player, the Accenda Voice Control for iPod is always on, listening for the user to say the prompting word "iPod." It then listens for the voice command and performs the desired operation. An "auto-mute" function allows the Accenda Voice Control for iPod to be used with external speakers (or automobile audio systems that use the iPod headphone port) by muting the audio so the Accenda Voice Control for iPod can hear the command. The well-thought-out product even includes a bass-boost function for improved listening with lower-cost ear buds.

While usable out-of-the-box by nearly all English-speaking users, the Accenda Voice Control for iPod may also be "trained" to recognize commands in other languages or to better understand iPod owners with strong accents.

The patent-pending device has been designed specifically to work with iPod and has been certified by the developer to meet Apple performance standards. The Accenda Voice Control for iPod is made for iPod nano (1st generation), iPod nano (2nd generation), iPod nano (3rd generation), iPod touch, iPod with color display, iPod mini, iPod with Click Wheel, iPod with video, and iPod classic.

The Accenda Voice Control for iPod has an MSRP of $99.95 and is expected to be available from most leading consumer electronic retailers. Samples are currently available, with full production in September. The package includes lapel clip and neck strap.

The Accenda Voice Control for iPod is the fifth generation of voice-operated and voice-interactive product from Innotech Systems. Other products include voice operated remote controls, alarm clocks, timers, and even a voice-operated thermostat for visually impaired consumers.

Aquapac Waterproof Case for iPhone

PR: If you're the active-in-the-Great-Outdoors type and you need to take your expensive feature packed iphone with you then the odds are seriously stacked against its surviving very long. Unless the iphone is already 100% waterproof - is yours? Have you ever lost a phone to water damage? If not, you've been really lucky... so far! Depending on who you talk to, something between 10% and 25% of all mobile phones end up ruined by water unless you protect it inside a 100% waterproof Aquapac.

If like a lot of people nowadays the main reason you take your phone with you in the first place is as a safety device - so you can call for help if you get into trouble - isn't it doubly important that you can trust it to work when you need it to? Check out some of the customer testimonials lower down this page and read some real-life examples of Aquapacs saving lives.

Tuck your phone safely inside an Aquapac and you'll be able to take it and use it wherever you want to go and whatever you like to get up to.

Details:

  • You can make and take calls right through the case material. With most phones it makes no noticeable difference to the volume. And the GPS signal is unaffected.
  • We've added a LENZFLEX window on the back, which means that if you have a camera-phone you'll be able to take photos right through the case.
  • The Aquapac for iPhone (code 104) fits the average size phones and GPS units.
  • Most phones float in the Aquapac, but a few don't such as the iPhone. Ultra-slim phones like the iPhone should float if you fold up a few pieces of tissue paper and slide them into the case behind the phone.
  • Test yours in a basin before first use outdoors.
  • It's guaranteed submersible to 15 feet (5 metres).
  • The UV-stabilized TPU material won't be broken down or discoloured by sunlight.
  • It keeps out dust and sand too.

Supplied with:

  • It comes with an adjustable neckcord so you can hang it round your neck.
  • It comes with our 3-year global warranty (see 'Buy with confidence' below).

2008 sees us going '100% PVC-Free'. Our new material (TPU) offers a number of advantages:

  • It's softer and more malleable. Making it even easier to operate your camera controls through the material.
  • It'll perform much better if you want to take it somewhere really cold.
  • It'll still be soft and malleable at -40º and below.
  • It has a greater tensile strength, meaning it's even more difficult to tear or rip apart.
  • We've added optically-clear LENZFLEX windows to the back making the Aquapac camera-phone friendly.

The Aquapac for iPhone Case (code 104) fits only really small phones and GPS units. It's the smallest of our range of 5 different sizes of phone/GPS cases. To make sure you choose the right case check out our Size Guide.

If you think you'd like to be able to 'wear' your phone or GPS, check out the Small Armband Case (code 210).

Case Dimensions: Maximum size of equipment to fit in case

Length: 5in/125mm

Circumference: 6in/150mm

The patented Aquaclip seals the case - with a simple twist of a couple of levers. It's been tested to the toughest international waterproofing standards.
