iPad Defies Skeptics, User Satisfaction Still Increasing

PR: Since its launch in April last year, Apple's iPad tablet has confounded skeptics and set a high bar for would-be competitors now introducing their own tablets.

An internationally recognized authority on media tablets and e-readers from the University of Missouri finds that iPad owners are reporting exceptionally high levels of satisfaction - and user satisfaction appears to increase the longer they use the device.

Roger Fidler, program director for digital publishing at the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri, has been conducting surveys of iPad users since last fall to gain insights into how iPad owners use the devices in their daily lives and how the iPad may influence journalism and news consumption. Fidler says he's surprised by the high levels of user satisfaction.

"It's unusual for new technology devices," Fidler said. "In most cases, satisfaction tends to drop off significantly after about 13 weeks. That clearly is not the trend with the iPad."

Fidler found in his first survey last fall that 94% of the 1,600 respondents were either very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with their iPad. In his follow-up survey this spring, nearly 70% of the 561 owners who responded said they were even more satisfied than they were last fall.

"While the iPad is designed for consuming all kinds of media, it has become clear that leisure reading of news and features is very popular with owners," Fidler said. "The iPad's ultra-thin, lightweight nearly magazine-size screen is more conducive for reading than laptop computers and other mobile devices. The screen size seems to be one of the main reasons for its sustained user satisfaction."

Fidler also found that a majority of owners prefer to use their iPads at home during the evening hours while relaxing in an easy chair or on a couch. (Publisher's note: See iPad Shows Unique Usage Patterns Compared to Other Platforms in last week's iNews Review for more on iPad usage patterns. dk)

Fidler is currently working on another survey for this summer that will gauge satisfaction with all tablets now on the market. Results of that survey will be available in the fall.

Mobile Video in the Workplace Leads to Employees Gone Wild

PR: US adults believe others' top uses of mobile devices while at work (instead of using a work computer) include looking for a new job and online dating, and among the most popular ways US adults think others sneak peeks at mobile devices during work meetings is to hide them under the table or in a notebook, according to Qumu, which has announced findings of its June 2011 survey of 2,510 Americans aged 18 and older, conducted online by Harris Interactive. The survey found that a majority of online Americans (64%) are watching online videos, and men are significantly more likely than women to say they have ever watched any kind of online video while at work (53% vs. 34%, respectively). But while 17% of all online Americans have watched online company videos at work, that's not all they admit to watching. The most popular choice was news clips (25%), followed by viral videos (15%), videos posted on social networking sites (12%), sports events/sports clips (11%), television shows (9%), full length feature films (4%) and other online videos (3%).

A majority (61%) of online Americans agree that companies should allow employees to use whatever mobile device they choose for work related tasks, like reading email and viewing company videos, which introduces a number of challenges to the networks of American companies, since a 90 second video clip is 700 times larger than the average email and there are over 30 combinations of video formats to support for mobile devices. However, only 9% of online Americans believe employees are very aware of what kind of effects watching online videos on their mobile devices at work have may have on the speed and bandwidth of their company's wireless Internet network (if that is how the online content is being accessed). Half of online Americans (50%) think employees are at least somewhat aware of these effects of online video in the workplace.

In fact, it seems having mobile devices has made online Americans think that people take risks with what they do online (on their mobile device). Almost three out of four online Americans (74%) believe with mobile devices, people will do things they would not normally do on their work computer. Those activities include:

  • 52% - Look for another primary job
  • 47% - Visit an online dating website
  • 46% - Look for a side job
  • 37% - Research embarrassing illness/condition
  • 33% - Shop for lingerie/underwear
  • 20% - Investigate plastic surgery options

A majority of online Americans (63%) believe that during work meetings, people sneak-a-peek at their mobile device. The favored methods online Americans believe that others use to catch a glimpse of what was on their handheld included:

  • 47% - Hiding their mobile device under the table
  • 42% - Excusing themselves to go to the restroom
  • 35% - Hiding their mobile device in their folders/notebooks/papers
  • 9% - Pretending to tie their shoes
  • 8% - Creating a distraction

On the other hand, 37% of online Americans didn't think sneaking a peek was necessary - they thought people would just look at their mobile devices in plain view.

While corporate leaders may be concerned about employee uses of online video and how it can impact the company's network and productivity, video cannot be shut out. Nearly all online Americans who watch online videos (88%) like something about watching online videos, with a majority of 18-34 year old men (70%) and women (76%) favoring it for its convenience. Online Americans who watch online videos also cited other positive aspects of video including how it is easily shared on social networking sites or email (36%), they are engaging and memorable (25%), they afforded more privacy than watching something on TV (14%) and they made context easier to understand through facial expressions (9%).

To help companies adapt to the challenges posed by video, social media, and mobile use, Qumu announced a technology breakthrough that enables video content to be centrally managed while enabling video to be embedded in virtually any business application, portal or mobile app. The Qumu Video Platform includes both the Video Control Center 6.0 and its sister product VideoNet 2.0. The Qumu Video Platform enables the enterprise to manage, organize and securely distribute live and on-demand video to each desktop and every mobile viewer, such as iPads, iPhones and Android devices.

Qumu knows the future of business depends on video being consumed anytime, anywhere, said Ray Hood, CEO of Qumu. While the results of our survey may seem amusing, we at Qumu don't condone that behavior and we give Enterprises the tools to manage the workforce. Not only can the Enterprise determine what videos employees can watch at work, they can also monitor when vital content like training material and company addresses have been watched. That way, the Enterprise can ensure everyone is on the same page.

To thank the people who ensure video in major companies run dependably and smoothly, Qumu is debuting a video homage to the IT and system administrators. Award-winning video game art director and filmmaker Jerry O'Flaherty imaginatively casts the enterprise as a metaphorical spaceship whose very survival from imminent destruction depends on the quick-thinking of its IT administrator. You can watch the 90-second clip on YouTube.

Automotive App for Canadian Car Buyers

Automotive AppPR: Automotive App exists to give Canadians more power when it comes to the automotive world. This is accomplished by Automotive App giving you the consumer information for New Vehicles, Auto Repair, Test Drives, Industry News, Financial, Vehicle Recalls, Car Wash, and Gas Stations.

With new vehicles, customers often feel powerless around confident dealers. With Automotive App, the customer has an independent source of information, and won't have to depend on a dealer as the only source of information. One customer who used Automotive App had this to say:

Automotive App"I walked into a dealership to look at a particular vehicle and model. The dealer who helped me told me that the model I was looking for didn't exist and instead starting showing me a model that was $7,000 more than what I came into look at. This dealer was even quoting prices on the more expensive model that was $3,000 more than the actual cost. With Automotive App I was able to confront this dealer leaving him speechless, while I drove away to another dealer who had no problem showing me the model I wanted to look at and for the price that Automotive App said it should of been."

Automotive AppIn addition, many manufacturers use Flash for their websites. Flash famously doesn't work on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch; thus you cannot access vehicle and pricing information on your portable device. Automotive App gives you this information, so you can find out information about any new vehicle available in Canada, anywhere you are.

Along with the power of knowing what vehicles are available and what their actual price is (with all available incentives), Automotive App will give you the power to find the perfect vehicle for the right price. No longer will dealers hold all the cards, as Automotive App is by your side and ready to help.

Automotive AppPlus new vehicles aren't the only aspect of the automotive world Automotive App will help you with. As the app also helps with:

  • Auto Repair - You'll know all of the closest mechanic and auto body shops.
  • Test Drive - Automotive App will walk you through various questions you should be asking yourself when test driving a vehicle, giving you a rating on how well the vehicle works for you and the ability to compare results.
  • Vehicle Recalls - Keeping up-to-date with vehicle recalls can be difficult. But with Automotive App once you save your vehicles to the app looking up what recalls have been called is quick and painless. Vehicle Recalls also helps when looking for a used vehicle, as you can quickly find out about any recalls the vehicle you're looking at may have.

DryCase Waterproof Phone, Camera, and Music Player Case (Tablet Version Available Too)

DryCasePR: DryCase is a flexible, crystal clear waterproof case that allows complete use of your phone, camera, tablet PC or e-reader while keeping it dry and clean.

DryCase Waterproof iPhone, iPod, iPad, Kindle and Droid Cases

Simply pump out all the air with the easy to use hand pump and the bag will vacuum seal around the contents and become completely waterproof. The air tight seal guarantees that the contents of the bag will stay dry even when submerged underwater. Every DryCase comes with an extreme activity arm band for water sports, and is crystal clear so pictures can be taken through it while using the other side.

DryCase works with Almost Any Portable Electronic Device

The DryCase works as a waterproof Blackberry Case, a waterproof Digital Camera Case, a waterproof Droid case, a waterproof iPod & MP3 Player Case and with many other devices.

Using the DryCase Involves Three Easy Steps

  1. DryCase Slide in your device Twist the clasps outward to open the DryCase, and then simply slide in the device that you would like to protect.
  2. Lock the closure shut Twist the clasps inward to close and lock the DryCase. Position your device how you would like to use it inside the DryCase. When you remove the air creating a vacuum it will secure the device in place.
  3. Pump out all the air Simply squeeze the pump until you have removed all the air and cant pump it any more. After you have removed all the air the DryCase should be tightly sealed around the contents inside and the pump should be completely flat. You can now remove the hand pump and place the safety cap on.

The vacuum seal is similar to that used in the company's medical products that have featured the technique for more than 10 years. If a surgery was to get wet, it might get infected. When used properly with the vacuum intact the device inside the case will stay completely Dry.

DryCaseThe DryCase is claimed to be truly, completely waterproof. The vacuum seal takes all the air out of the case so there is no way that water can enter. There can be no exchange of gas (air) for liquid (water). The vacuum seal also allows full use of your touch screen because it seal flush on the face of the phone.

The DryCase also features a 3-way headphone jack, allowing you to use both stereo headphones and your microphone. This allows you to listen to music or even take calls. You can also hear and talk through the DryCase as long as a little air is left in. It will still be waterproof and can be sealed - there just needs to be a little bit of air for sound waves to travel.

Although the product works great with the iPhone and other smartphones, it will fit almost any sized phone, camera or MP3 player. The DryCase is 4.25" wide (10.8 cm) and 6.5" long (16.5 cm) and will fit almost any phone, camera, or MP3 player.

Should a problem occur, return the DryCase within one year, with your receipt, and they will send you a replacement. The warranty does not include abnormal wear and tear or damage from misuse . When used properly under the vacuum seal your device will remain completely dry. If you purchase a DryCase and you are unsatisfied with it in anyway, you may send back the unused DryCase to us for a refund with in seven days from the date purchased.
