17.6% of Laptops Sold Are Macs
MacUser's Derik DeLong reports:
"There's the old chestnut that Apple has a mere couple of
percent of the market (as if a couple percent of multiple millions
is something to sneeze at). We've also known for some time now that
laptops are fast becoming the choice of both home and business
users. Given that trend, Apple now capturing 17.6% of the laptop
market in the US is not too shabby.
"While they're only the third strongest seller of computers in
general, nearly one out of five laptops out there have that
signature Apple logo riding the back of the display...."

MacBooks Drive 'Transformation' in PC
Sales
Macworld UK's Jonny Evans reports:
"Apple is becoming the de facto standard laptop supplier, a
survey suggests.
"New research indicates that Apple laptop sales have soared to
new highs on the back of a new halo effect for the company's
products generated by clamour surrounding iPhone.
"A ChangeWave survey confirms first intimations of the move as
indicated in a previous such survey in June. A survey run across
the first week of August now describes a "transformational shift"
that is propelling good fortune for Apple - but denting
Dell....
"In an ongoing alteration of the consumer PC landscape, Apple
laptop sales have surged to a new all-time high over the past 90
days - up from 12 per cent in June to 17 per cent currently. Apple
desktop sales (7 per cent; down from 8 per cent) have been solid
but unspectacular during that same time period....
"But it's the future that truly represents the change. A total
of 28 per cent of respondents who plan to purchase a laptop in the
next 90 days say they'll get a Mac...."

Apple Takes Silver, Toshiba Gains Gold for
'Green' Notebooks
Techworld.com's Chris Mellor reports:
"Mirror, mirror on the wall; who is the greenest vendor of them
all? Toshiba has had five of its notebooks rated gold by EPEAT, the
environmental agencies top green rating. And claims that this is
more gold-rated notebooks than any other supplier can boast.
"Apple can only claim 5 silver-rated laptops to its name.
"EPEAT is a US PC environmental rating organization. The US
government has mandated that federal PC purchases must be of
EPEAT-rated PCs, encompassing desktops, notebooks and monitors. The
agency has a searchable database of products rated gold, silver or
bronze in terms of their environmental friendliness."

Current Li-Ion Battery Design 'Flawed'
The Register's James Sherwood reports:
"It won't come as much of a surprise to Sony, but the present
design of lithium-ion cell batteries that power our consumer
electronics is flawed, according to Japanese researchers. The
startling announcement has been made by the Tokyo Institute of
Technology, which claims that such batteries must be redesigned to
avoid further potential dangers.
"A spokesperson at the institute has described the average
lithium-ion battery as 'quite a dangerous little box of
energy'...."

Problem with MacBook Internal Power
Connector
Hardmac's Lionel reports:
"One of our readers from a certified Apple Repair Center sent us
a report concerning a problem affecting the internal power
connector of some MacBooks.
"...there is a short circuit between the internal connector and
the motherboard. It burns tracks, and the entire board has to be
exchanged.
"The problem does not affect many units (yet?), but we can
confirm from our disassembling experiments, that the internal
connector seems lousy, while it is a critical component."

Protection Plan for iPhone, which extends your repair coverage to

Price: $69
If you're not familiar with Apple's Certified Refurbished
products, here are the broad strokes. Apple Certified Refurbished
Products are preowned Apple products that undergo Apple's stringent
refurbishment process prior to being offered for sale. These
products have been returned under Apple's Return and Refund
Policies. While only some units are returned due to technical
issues, all units undergo the full quality refurbishment
process.
Each Apple Certified Refurbished Product:
- is fully tested (including full burn-in testing).
- is refurbished with replacement parts for any defective modules
identified in testing.
- is put through a thorough cleaning process and inspection.
- is repackaged (including appropriate manuals, cables, new
boxes, etc.).
- includes the operating software originally shipped with the
unit and the custom software offered with that system. See each
products "Learn More" for more details.
- is given a new refurbished part number and serial number.
- is placed into a Final QA inspection prior to being added to
sellable refurbished stock.
Refurbishment procedures follow the same basic technical
guidelines as Apple's Finished Goods testing procedures, and ACR
Products are covered by the same 12-month Apple warranty that
applies to new Apple products, and are also eligible for extended
AppleCare coverage up to two years from purchase (three years for
Mac products).

Toshiba Introduces World's First 320 GB 2.5"
Hard Drive
PR: Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD) has announced
the world's first 320 GB1 2.5" Hard Drive, as the lead
product in a new series of 5,400 RPM notebook drives. The company
also expanded into the high-end 7,200 RPM performance class with a
family of products offering up to 200 GB capacity.
Toshiba's new 5,400 RPM 2.5" Hard Drives feature capacity points
from 80 GB to 320 GB, using both 120 GB-per-platter and 160
GB-per-platter designs in the MK-46GSX and MK-52GSX families,
respectively. The high-end 7,200 RPM MK-49GSY series features
capacity points of 80 GB to 200 GB. All three families support the
Serial ATA interface at a 3.0 Gbps data transfer rate, and
free-fall sensor options are available on select models.
This broad lineup of storage solutions for information
technology (IT) and consumer electronics (CE) OEMs is based on an
extensible platform that incorporates a shared architectural base
and common components. Leveraging this platform enabled Toshiba's
development teams in the United States and Japan to bring products
to market quicker and provided more manufacturing flexibility to
meet changing customer demands.
By utilizing the latest head and media technologies, the
extensible platform architected by Toshiba will provide the fastest
native transfer rates yet achieved in mobile 2.5" products - a key
factor in overall drive performance.
"Our global collaboration and new architectural platform greatly
accelerated our ability to deliver industry-leading 2.5" capacity,
while introducing a broad array of 2.5" product offerings," said
Scott Maccabe, vice president and general manager of Toshiba
Storage Device Division. "Toshiba's engineering innovation has
positioned us competitively for the future and demonstrates our
long-term commitment to addressing the growing demand for capacity
and feature-rich storage solutions for digital data, as end users
continue to embrace video and multimedia applications."
Toshiba successfully orchestrated a collaborative design effort
with the company's design teams at the Storage Design Center in
Fremont, Calif., and the Ome, Japan, development center to bring
this lineup to market. Using Toshiba's innovative extensible
platform approach, designs for these new product families feature
commonality in fundamental Hard Drive components such as heads,
media, ASICs and firmware. In addition to accelerating the
development schedule, extensibility increases manufacturing
efficiencies and speeds up the OEM qualification process, giving
Toshiba a solid foundation for future technology introductions.
The company's 2.5" Hard Drive lineup now spans from the
ultra-power-conservative segment with the existing 200 GB 4,200 RPM
MK2035GSS, to the mainstream market with the new 5,400 RPM MK-GSX
series and, finally, to the high-performance category with the new
7,200 RPM MK-GSY offering. Toshiba is well-positioned to deliver
the right capacity and performance options to meet the needs of IT
and CE manufacturers for mobile PCs, compact external storage
devices, personal video recorders, gaming consoles, converged TVs,
printers, point-of-sale terminals, media centers and audio/video
editing systems.
According to Gartner, 2.5" mobile-class PATA/SATA-interface Hard
Drive shipments worldwide will increase from 112 million in 2006 to
more than 280 million in 2011.2
"The mobile 2.5"/9.5mm-Z-height form factor will be servicing a
wider and richer variety of applications," said John Monroe, a
research vice president at Gartner. "Increasing capacities at lower
costs, coupled with enhanced performance and reliability metrics,
will enable this class of product to further penetrate new consumer
markets as well as expanding possibilities for integration in the
traditional PC and blade server markets."
As storage becomes imperative to a digitally driven and mobile
world, IT and CE manufacturers need more features to protect data
and improve Hard Drive performance. To address these requirements,
Toshiba has designed a state-of-the-art free-fall sensor option
that enables the drive to respond to 10-inch or greater drops when
integrated in OEM systems. Toshiba's free-fall sensor option
features Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART)
events reporting and has been adopted by the industry for
standardization as part of the upcoming ATA-8 interface
specification.
Toshiba's new Hard Drive families are RoHS3 compliant and will
begin production in the fourth quarter of 2007.

"Fujitsu has taken the use of biodegradable plastic beyond
picnic ware and household items, and designed a notebook with a
biodegradable chassis.

COOLdock Laptop Stand with Forced Air Cooling
System
PR: In recent times overheating has been a hot topic
for laptop users, with battery recalls from major manufacturers due
to risk of explosion and overheating defects, leaving many users in
the lurch, and others feeling uneasy about the ongoing safety and
reliability of theirs.
Introducing the COOLdock Laptop Stand - an easy and
cost-effective solution to help prevent the problems associated
with overheating. Its unique inbuilt cooling fan system dissipates
heat away from your computer. Better still, it plugs directly into
a USB port - no mains power is required. A cooler laptop reduces
heat buildup, which extends battery life and processing speed.
"Not only will the COOLdock Laptop Stand keep your system cool,
its ergonomic design will also help reduce back, neck and wrist
strain, by improving posture. While laptop computers are handy and
endlessly portable, the effects can be debilitating for heavy
users," comments Bad Back Store's Managing Director Felicity
Wood.
The problem, of course, is that the screen and keyboard are
attached. This is convenient when you are on the go, but its design
means a tradeoff between poor neck/head posture and poor hand/wrist
posture; either the keyboard is too high or the screen is too low.
"The COOLdock Laptop Stand offers eight levels of adjustable screen
height tilt providing the ultimate in ergonomic comfort. It's
really a state-of-the-art upgrade for your laptop, a real must
have," says Wood.
Features:
- Space-saving, money-saving solution eliminates the need for
extra monitors.
- Smart, simple fashion and unique design
- Built-in 4-port USB 2.0 hub provides one-time connection for
computer accessories
- 8 Level adjustable screen height tilt for optimal viewing and
ergonomic comfort.
- Allows positioning of LCD at eye-level to help reduce neck
strain.
- Built-in 2 cooling fans dissipate heat away from the laptop and
cools down the overall temperature of the system
Specifications
- Product Dimension : 327x281x46mm
- 4 USB 2.0 ports
- ON/OFF power switch
- Fan Dimension: 60 x 60 x 10 mm
- Rated Voltage: 5V DC
- Power Current: 0.18 A
- Rated Consumption: 0.9 W
- Rated Speed: 3500 ± 10%RPM
- Airflow: 30 CFM
- Static Pressure: 2.01 mm H2O
- Noise Level: < 26 dBA
Some additional tips to help improve posture when working on a
laptop include:
- Use an external mouse and keyboard and keep them at the edge of
your desk.
- Adjust your chair so your desk is just a little below your
sitting elbow height. Raise the laptop so the top of the screen is
just below eye level.
- Don't lean on your desk while typing and keep your elbows in
line with your shoulders, hanging loosely at your sides.
- When using the laptop keyboard, try not to drop your wrists
onto the "wristrest". Instead, move your hands freely across the
keyboard and keep your hands in line with your elbows.
