Back-to-School Notebooks: Don't Choose on Price Alone

The Chicago Tribune's Eric Gwinn says:

"Macs and PCs are so different under the hood that dollar-for-dollar comparisons are difficult to make. For instance, the Mac comes with easy-to-use music, photo and video software so you can have fun or get to work right away. Adding similar programs to a basic PC bumps up its price. Then there's the update factor. Rumors of new Apple products swirl every few months.

"Back-to-school shopping for a Mac laptop is different from searching for one from a PC manufacturer, which we did last week. The choices and pricing are very different: PCs are made by numerous manufacturers, tend to come in a large array of technical configurations and run a Windows operating system and Windows-compatible software. Mac laptops are made by Apple, come in fewer models and technical combinations and run the OS X operating system and software created for the Mac.

"Bare-bones PC laptops start in the US$500 range; half the price of the cheapest Mac. However, don't choose on price alone."

One MacBook with a ThinkPad Keyboard Please

ZD Net's David Berlind says:

TrackPoint and touchpad"Just because almost everybody is doing it, does that mean it's a good idea? Or does that mean that we've somehow been hoodwinked into thinking this makes sense. I'm talking about touchpads. Somehow, users have been convinced that these kissin-cousins to the digitizing tablets that graphics artists use (where the technology benefits productivity) make sense as a pointing device near a notebook's keyboard. It's a rotten bill of goods. Touchpads make sense to manufacturers because there are fewer moving parts that can fail (digging into profits if the machine is under warranty). Unless you're one of the ten people in the world that's particularly adept at guiding a mouse around the screen with your thumbs (I've never seen anyone doing this), touchpads are a productivity killer.

"This gets to the one reason I don't own a MacBook: none of the MacBook models come with pointing stick like the TrackPoints found on ThinkPads. Maybe I'm in the minority but, touchpads like the ones found on MacBooks simply can't compare from a productivity point of view to a keyboard with a pointing stick that sits near a touch typists index fingers...."

Editor's note: Gotta disagree on this one. I had a ThinkPad here for a while last spring, and while I thought the keyboard was great, I couldn't stand the wretched TrackPoint stick. Touchpads aren't perfect, and some are a lot better than others, but I sure wouldn't want to be stuck using a TrackPoint. cm

Apple Won't Refund 'Lemon' MacBook

Consumerist.com reports:

"Dear Consumerist,

"So I purchased a MacBook last year and it's been a nightmare. It's been replaced twice now, each time with multiple mail-out services before Apple would replace the laptop.

"Each time Apple representatives told me that under warranty details they will refund at 'their discretion', which seems to mean never. Am I stuck with yet another lemon laptop now that I've run out of ways to escalate?

"Does California offer me any good consumer protection? Can I take them to small claims court perhaps?

"When I encountered issues with the third machine, I took your column's advice and escalated to a supervisor on the technical line and asked for a refund, but met with a canned denial. So I escalated to Jean Toulouse, but met with a canned denial from a secondary. So I escalated to Steve Jobs, but met with a canned denial from a secondary."

15" MacBook Pro 'a Dream Machine'

LaptopMag's Jeffrey L. Wilson reports:

"You can't tell by looking at the sexy, familiar aluminum design that the MacBook Pro has undergone several significant improvements that elevate it from a very good machine to one that's arguably the best in its class. Aimed at mobile professionals who want power and performance in an easy-to-carry design, the MacBook Pro features a blazing-fast Intel Core 2 Duo processor, powerful Nvidia graphics, outstanding battery life, and one of the best software suites around. Starting at a reasonable $1,999, the MacBook Pro is definitely a dream machine for creative types seeking a notebook for work and play."
