Low End Mac Benchmarks

PowerBook 170

Dan Knight - 1999.01.20 - Tip Jar

The PowerBook 170 uses a 25 MHz 68030 CPU, so performance is about twice that of the SE or Classic. Drive is the stock 80 MB Apple drive.

Remember that benchmarks are arbitrary. They measure certain types of performance that may or may not reflect the way you work.

Speedometer 3.06

The system was tested on 20 January 1999 under System 7.5.5 with inessential extensions off. Results are relative to a Mac SE or Classic, which rates 1.0. Numbers rounded off to three significant digits.

cache CPU graphics disk math
 32KB 6.37 5.26 1.74 22.2
 64KB 6.37 5.26 1.76 22.1
128KB 6.37 5.27 1.77 21.9
256KB 6.39 5.27 1.82 21.9

The cache setting should have little influence on non-disk tests, which these numbers bear out. With this particular setup, cache size makes no appreciable difference.

Speedometer 4.02

The system was tested on 20 January 1999 under System 7.5.5 with most inessential extensions off. Results are relative to a Quadra 605, which rates 1.0. Numbers rounded off to two decimal places.

cache CPU graphics disk math
 32KB 0.40 0.20 0.68 3.15
 64KB 0.40 0.21 0.69 3.15
128KB 0.40 0.21 0.68 3.14
256KB 0.40 0.20 0.71 3.16

The cache setting should have little influence on non-disk tests, which these numbers bear out. As above, with this particular setup, cache size makes no appreciable difference.
