iPhone 3G USB Power Adapter Recall and Exchange Program

PR: Apple has determined that under certain conditions the new ultracompact Apple USB power adapter's metal prongs can break off and remain in a power outlet, creating a risk of electric shock. The company have received reports of detached blades involving a very small percentage of the adapters sold, but no injuries have been reported.

The ultracompact USB power adapters were supplied with every iPhone 3G sold in the following countries, and may also have been purchased separately as an accessory:

  • US
  • Japan
  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • Several Latin American countries

Note: Apple USB power adapters supplied with original iPhones or supplied with iPhone 3G units sold in other countries are not affected.

Apple has voluntarily decided to exchange every ultracompact power adapter for a new, redesigned adapter, free of charge.

Users with ultracompact power adapters should immediately stop using them until they exchange them for a new, redesigned ultracompact adapter.

In the meantime, they should charge their iPhone 3G by connecting it to their computer with the USB cable that came with their iPhone or by using a standard-sized Apple USB Power Adapter (with fold up prongs) or with a third party adapter designed to work with the iPhone, such as a car charger.

If you purchased an iPhone 3G in any of the countries listed above, you received the ultracompact USB adapter.

Replacement adapters will be available starting Friday, October 10, 2008.

There are two ways to exchange your current ultracompact Apple USB power adapter for a new, redesigned adapter.

Order a replacement adapter via the web. These replacement adapters will ship within three weeks of your order, starting on Friday, October 10.

Exchange your adapter at an Apple Retail Store starting on October 10.

Apple needs to collect your iPhone 3G's serial number as part of the exchange process.

If you apply via the web, you will also need to provide your name and address so that we can send you a new adapter along with a shipment box so that you can return the affected adapter to Apple.

If you visit an Apple Retail Store, you need to bring your affected adapter(s) and your iPhone 3G(s) with you to complete the exchange process.

If you live in Latin America, we will announce the appropriate exchange program information before October 10.

Confessions of an iPhone Convert

TidBITS' Joe Kissell says:

"As I write this, it's my two-month anniversary of being an iPhone owner. (We're celebrating by taking a vacation to Italy together; my wife, who has sometimes referred to herself as an 'iPhone widow,' is coming too.) What's surprising from my current vantage point is that I spent a number of months fully convinced that I was outside the target audience for this device, and that, cool as it unarguably was, I simply would never own an iPhone (or its slimmer sibling, the iPod touch). When I first got my iPhone 3G, I posted some thoughts on what had persuaded me to change my mind (see 'Totally an iPhone 3G owner,' 2008-07-17). Now that I've lived with it for a while, I've learned that I was right about some things and wrong about others - and some aspects of the iPhone experience (both good and bad) have surprised me.

"If you're thinking about joining the millions of (usually) happy iPhone or iPod touch owners but are still on the fence - or if you, like early-2008 Joe, think it just isn't worth it, perhaps you'll find my observations helpful in deciding one way or the other."

How to Connect an iPhone to a Mac and Share Files

Mac 360's Jeffrey Mincey says:

"Yes, your iPhone is so cool it's hot. So is your Mac. Connect your iPhone to your Mac and iTunes becomes the gatekeeper to move files back and forth.

"Is there an easier way with more options? Yes. PhoneView connects your iPhone or iPod touch to your Mac and acts like a disk drive.

"What's the fun in that? First, your iPhone or iPod touch becomes simply another disk attached to your Mac. That makes it a perfect backup solution for select valuable files that you want to store away from your Mac.

"PhoneView is a familiar-looking Mac utility, a cross between the Finder and iTunes, which lets you move files back and forth between iPhone or iPod touch and your Mac...."

How to Delete Apple's Apps from Your iPhone

The iPhone Cheat Sheet says:

"OK, I teased briefly about the Hidden 10th iPhone app screen that would allow you to get past the 148 app limit on the iPhone, and I will reveal its secrets here in a tip I know many of you have been waiting for someone to tell you - namely, How to delete Apple's official apps from the iPhone?"

6 Reasons Android Phones Will Be Better Than iPhones

The WWW Blog's Chetan says:

"Google's Android OS powered phones were in most of the tech blogs since the past few days with first the sneak peak, and then the hands-on reviews of the phone which first came with T-Mobile. It is said to be one of the best phones around and competitor for the World's dominating mobile company Nokia, and to the best gadget of the year Apple iPhone.

"And am sure its going to beat the Apple iPhone sales and would be really loved, except the design which does not seem so sleek to me. Here are a few reasons why one would love the Android phone when compared to the Apple iPhone....

  1. The open operating system...
  2. Faster than iPhone...
  3. No Jailbreaking needed....
  4. Online applications integration....
  5. QWERTY Sliding keyboard....
  6. Format supporting better than Apple...."

Google Phone to Cost $179, Debut October 22

A First Look at Google's New Phone

The New York Times' David Pogue says:

"Android, of course, is Google's new cellphone operating system, which over 30 phone companies and carriers have said they'll adopt. I'll have a full review when the time comes - I had only a few minutes to try the phone - but here are some first impressions...."

"...here's the thing: Android, and the G1, are open. Open, open, open, in ways that would make Steve Jobs cringe. You can unlock this phone after 90 days - that is, use any SIM card from any carrier in it. The operating system is free and open-source, meaning that any company can make changes without consulting or paying Google. The App store is completely open, too; T-Mobile and Google say they won't censor programs that they don't approve of, as Apple does with the iPhone store. Yes, even if someone writes a Skype-like program that lets people avoid using up T-Mobile cellular voice minutes...."

11 Ways Newton Is Still Better than iPhone

Newton Poetry says:

"So you went to an Apple store, made your purchase, sold your soul to some wireless carrier, and now you have tons of free apps downloaded and your voicemail is all set up. You're an iPhone 3G owner. What makes you so special? It might be that you don't have an Apple Newton MessagePad to play around with.

"Here are ten reasons to sell your 3G and take up the ten-years-abandoned Newton platform for fun and recreation...."

Editor's note: Actually some of them are quite compelling.... cm

Music, Retail, and Tech Leaders to Offer 'slotMusic'

PR: Leaders in music, retail and flash memory technology announced they're bringing consumers an innovative, new physical music format, dubbed "slotMusic". microSDcards will soon be made available with preloaded, high quality, DRM-free MP3 music of top artists from EMI Music, Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group. A selection of slotMusic cards will first be available at brick-and-mortar and online stores throughout the US, including Best Buy and Wal-Mart, with Europe to follow. A complete list of slotMusic albums, availability and pricing will be announced in time for the coming holiday season.

slotMusic cardSanDisk Corporation, inventor of the ubiquitous microSD format, is leading the technology development behind slotMusic.

slotMusic cards enable consumers to instantly and easily enjoy music from their favorite artists without being dependent on a PC or internet connection. Users simply insert the slotMusic card into their microSD-enabled mobile phone or MP3 player to hear the music without passwords, downloading, or digital-rights-management interfering with their personal use.

"slotMusic offers consumers an immediate, tangible, and high quality alternative to CDs and digital delivery," said Danielle Levitas, vice president, Consumer, Broadband & New Media, IDC. "This year, more than 1.2 billion mobile phones will ship globally, outstripping portable media players by nearly an order of magnitude - and this trend is accelerating."

slotMusic cards will be packaged with a tiny USB sleeve ensuring seamless interoperability with all computers Windows, Linux, and Mac. The upshot is that slotMusic will enjoy an unparalleled, preexisting installed base at launch: hundreds of millions of multimedia-phones, virtually any computer with a USB connector, and a growing number of in-car sound systems will be able to play slotMusic cards.

The MP3-based music tracks will be played back at up to 320 kilobytes per second (kbps), offering a high quality music experience for the MP3 format.

Musicians will find slotMusic cards offer a compelling new way to express themselves to their fans. With 1 GB (gigabyte) of capacity, slotMusic cards can hold songs, as well as liner notes, album art, videos, and other creative content that an artist may choose. Consumers can also add their own content to a slotMusic card, creating a personal plug-and-play media library.

iDialUDrive: Hands Free Dialer App for the iPhone

PR: iCloseBy.com has announced the release of iDialUDrive, a new App for the Apple iPhone which is used to automatically dial, hands free, anyone on a list of contacts.

Using the iPhone's built-in Contact Manager, iDialUDrive (I Dial - You Drive) lets iPhone owners easily create custom lists of people to call. Then, by touching just one control, iDialUDrive dials the first entry in the custom call list. After the first call is completed, iDialUDrive automatically will dial each of the next entries in the list, allowing commuters to make calls without ever having to touch their iPhone when they are driving.

How it works: before getting into a car, an iPhone owner can use iDialUDrive to make a custom call list of the people who need to be called during a commute. Then, after starting the commute, iDialUDrive will begin by calling the first person in the custom list, and when each call is completed, iDialUDrive will automatically hang up and then dial the next number. In the top reviewed cell phones, hands free dialing is one of the most asked for features. With iDailUDrive and any compatible headset, iPhone owners can now legally use their cell phone service as they drive.

With iDialUDrive, custom call lists can have any combination of contacts from the iPhone contact list, including friends, family, work partners, members on a school soccer team, shops and businesses.

iDialUDrive has these features:

  • Uses the Contact list on the Apple iPhone.
  • Works with any headset (Bluetooth, etc.).
  • Adjustable time between calls.
  • One-touch "Cancel All", to stop dialing.
  • Ultra low cost and simple to use.

Part of the integrated iCloseBy.com family of iPhone and iPod touch products, which now includes iDialUDrive, iMarkMySpot, and iCloseby-iFob.

It also includes a remote control that provides full access to the menu of music functions. It has a compact, vertical "floating" design that hides the docking station, offers CD R/RW playback, and has an AM/FM digital tuner.

Tunes on the Go

For iPod and iPhone users who want to experience their music out loud, Sony is introducing its first boombox that works with both devices. The ZS-S4iP boombox adds iPhone compatibility and enhanced sound quality through its Mega Bass Sound system.

"The new design and feature-sets of the iPod nano and iPod touch are a compelling combination - consumers will want to keep these devices with them all the time for not only enjoying music but for watching video, playing games and even keeping in touch on Facebook," said Andrew Saldana, VP Sales & Marketing of Macally. "The new cases from Macally let customers protect their iPod nano or iPod touch from drops and bumps while enjoying all the great new features the new devices have to offer."

The new innovative accessories for the iPod nano include the following cases, all of which include cutouts to access all connections and controls:

Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the IceSuit (part number IceSuitN4) is $19.99.
  • Divo: This dark brown leather case features cheery orange highlights, giving the Divo a youthful, fun look and feel. It protects the iPod nano from the inside out with a microsuede liner.
