Mac Daniel's Advice

Finding SyQuest Drivers

- 2001.05.11

This is an old column, and both links were broken. They now lead to the Internet Archive. FWB Hard Disk Toolkit has long since been discontinued, and download links from the Archive may not work. We recommend SCSI Probe as a good tool for mounting SyQuest and other uncooperative SCSI drives.

Q: I'm looking for a driver for those old SCSI SyQuest drives that take 270 MB cartridges.

A: Thankfully, the SyQuest Web site has been alive again since April 5, and it offers support for its old drives. You can go to their drivers download page. Specify which drive you are using to find the appropriate download. Normally, you should find what you are looking for.

But there is another option, one I recommend if you want drivers that take over everything you have or if the SyQuest site didn't provide something that works for you. FWB's Hard Disk Toolkit is interesting, since it can drive anything from SCSI to FireWire, especially if you can't find other drivers for them - and even your internal hard disk drive. It allows you to do more than just get the drives to be functional, but this is not an obligatory purchase. LEM
