Things have really taken off since we launched Quadlist on November 10, 1997 - just over two years ago. This was followed by Mac Webmasters on February 1998, then a whole host of lists (Vintage Macs, PowerBooks, PowerMacs, SuperMacs, and iMacs) in June 1998.

Eric Prentice began his first lists to promote his MacTips site, and began offering email forums in September 1998. Following is a chronological listing of our current lists:

  1. Quadlist, begun on 10 November 1997, is my most successful list. Created for users of 68040-based Macs, it currently has 670 subscribers. Discussions are pretty wide-ranging, from Plus to Power Mac G3.
  2. Mac Webmasters, started in February 1998, also has 320 subscribers. This list is especially for those managing Mac-related sites, although many webmasters who use Macs are also involved.
  3. Vintage Macs, begun 18 June 1998, is for users of pre-68040 Macs. This includes the compact Macs, the entire Mac II series, and several LC and Performa models. Current membership is 690.
  4. PowerBooks, begun 19 June 1998, is for users of PowerBooks and other portable Mac OS computers. The list has 715 subscribers.
  5. PowerMacs, begun 20 June 1998, is for users of Power Macs and PPC-based Mac OS compatibles. There are 690 members of the list.
  6. SuperMacs, begun 20 June 1998, is for user of the Umax SuperMac lines of Mac OS compatibles. Over 645 SuperMac users are subscribed.
  7. The iMac List, begun 29 June 1998, is for users and fans of the iMac. This list has grown to 600 members.
  8. DuoList, begun 24 September 1998. Discussion of PowerBook Duo computers and the PowerBook 2400. The list has 565 subscribers.
  9. Mac USB Talk List, begun 24 September 1998. Discussion of USB and USB peripherals on the Mac. There are 475 subscribers at present.
  10. iBook List, begun 29 October 1998 as the CPortList. Discussion of the iBook and AirPort. Stands at 695 subscribers.
  11. Mac FireWire Talk List, begun 7 January 1999. Discussion of FireWire and FireWire devices for the Mac. The list has 570 members.
  12. MacToMac, begun 10 May 1999, is a general purpose Mac list with 180 subscribers.
  13. MaX, begun 19 May 1999, is for Mac folk learning Linux, BSD, and other Unix-derived operating systems. Current membership is 215.
  14. Mac Games List, started 6 June 1999. The place to discuss gaming issues with 215 other Mac gamers.
  15. Compact Macs, begun 26 July 1999, specifically deals with 68000-based compact Macs. The list has 260 members.
  16. G4 List, begun on August 31, 1999. Discussion of the Power Mac G4 and G4 upgrades for earlier Macs. Membership has reached 780.
  17. Mac Canada, begun 27 October 1999, is for Mac users in Canada. The list has grown to 160 subscribers.
  18. Outback Mac, begun 1 November 1999, is for Mac users in Australia and New Zealand. The list has 75 members.
  19. Mac Digital Video, begun November 1999. The list now has 695 subscribers.
  20. G-List, begun 27 December 1999, is for PowerMac G3 and g4 users. The list currently has 01 members.

Announcement Lists

  1. Mac Digital Video, begun November 1999.
  2. Eight.Six Plus, announcement list. Covers updates to Mac OS 8.6 that are not part of the standard install.
