Mac mini Updated to 512 MB Memory, SuperDrive Model Added

The biggest Mac mini news story this week is a refreshment of the product line, with 512 MB of memory standard in every model plus built-in wireless networking with AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth starting at $599 and the ability to burn DVDs with a SuperDrive for $699.

However, I find this update a bit underwhelming, given that video support remains a non-programmable Radeon 9200 GPU, which does not fully support Core Image graphics in OS X 10.4 Tiger, and there has even been a downgrade on the two more expensive models (go figure) with the modem, of all things, now a $29 option.

The Mac mini is available immediately through the Apple Store, Apple's retail stores, and Apple Authorized Resellers in three standard configurations.

The 1.25 GHz Mac mini, for a suggested retail price of $499 (US), includes:

  • 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 processor;
  • 512 MB of 333 MHz DDR SDRAM, expandable to 1 GB;
  • 40 GB Ultra ATA hard drive;
  • Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) optical drive;
  • ATI Radeon 9200 graphics processor with 32 MB video memory;
  • one FireWire 400 and two USB 2.0 ports;
  • 10/100 Base-T Ethernet networking and 56K V.92 modem;
  • internal support for AirPort Extreme wireless networking and Bluetooth;
  • DVI or VGA out (adapter included), composite/S-video out with optional adapter; and
  • built-in speaker and headphone/line out.

The 1.42 GHz Mac mini, for a suggested retail price of $599 (US), includes:

  • 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4 processor;
  • 512 MB of 333 MHz DDR SDRAM, expandable to 1 GB;
  • 80 GB Ultra ATA hard drive;
  • Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) optical drive;
  • ATI Radeon 9200 graphics processor with 32 MB video memory;
  • one FireWire 400 and two USB 2.0 ports;
  • 10/100 Base-T Ethernet networking;
  • built-in AirPort Extreme wireless networking and Bluetooth;
  • DVI or VGA out (adapter included), composite/S-video out with optional adapter; and
  • built-in speaker and headphone/line out.

Mac mini Overheating Issues?

Digital Lifestyles' Lawrence Dudley says:

"What with the summer in full swing, and the weather in the good old UK being as warm as it has been, I have observed some serious heat issues while using my Mac Mini.

"On particularly warm nights, the fan never seems to switch itself off, and seeing as it's in my bedroom, I have to switch the computer off so I can sleep.

"It's also my Web server (I'm on a budget, get over it!), and so this means my Website is unavailable on warm nights. This fan issue is also accompanied with terrible performance, and occasional freezes and crashes, which is something that never otherwise really happens on a Mac."

mini Thoughts and Enhancements

Tim at Little Blue Frog says:

"I love Mac Mini's. There is no doubting it. Despite giving mine up to a very good home a while ago now I still marvel at how Apple have managed to pack a decent enough machine into such a small, attractive and quiet package. However, the mini is not without its faults and it is with this in mind that I bring you a couple of products that can help alleviate these problems. OK, you got me, I'm really just posting this in the hope that Tuddly or Josh will buy one or both of the products below so I can have a look. :)

"Perhaps the two most criticised points of the Mac mini are its lack of external ports and hard disk capacity/speed. Given how small the housing for the computer is, these are two points at which the mini was never going to excel. Lets face the facts: Laptop sized hard disks don't spin at high speeds and there is only so much space on a case that measures 16.5 centimetres wide and 5 centimetres high. However, as always, there is no shortage of third party products that aim to address these shortfalls. Today I bring you two."

How to Reset the PMU in a Mac mini

"The Power Management Unit (PMU) is an integrated circuit (computer chip) typically found on a computer's logic board. As its name implies, the PMU is responsible for managing all aspects of the computer's power. It controls hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, and how any devices attached to the computer affect sleep.

"If the settings in the PMU become corrupted, it can result in operational anomalies such as your computer not turning on, not displaying video, or not waking from sleep, among other things. In these situations, you may need to reset your computer's PMU.

"Resetting the PMU will not resolve issues in which the computer stalls or is unresponsive. A PMU reset should only be used as a last resort in the case of a hardware failure or when the power management system is suspected. Resetting the PMU returns the computer hardware, including NVRAM, to default settings and forces the computer to shut down."

MaxConnect Allows 9 Hard Drives Inside Power Mac G5

MaxConnectPR: MaxConnect is an internal hard disk drive mounting solution that allows seven additional hard disk drives to be installed in a G5 Power Mac system. The MaxConnect consists of two mounting assemblies. An Optical Drive Bay Disk Drive mounting assembly enables four hard disk drives to be mounted in the Optical Drive Bay of the G5 Power Mac. A MaxConnect CPU Bay Disk Drive Mounting Assembly enables installing three hard disk drives in the CPU bay of the G5 Power Mac .

With the MaxConnect internal hard disk drive mounting solution, a G5 Power Mac can house a total of nine disk drives internally, which enables the system to boot from one drive and allows the rest of the eight drives to be RAIDed (Striped RAID 0) to offer an 8x speed increase in the data transfer rate compared to a single drive G5 Power Mac. Sustained data transfer rates up to 500 MB/sec can be achieved by striping the hard disk drives using Mac OS X built-in RAID software utility on G5 Power Mac Systems with PCI-X slots.

The MaxConnect internal hard disk drive mounting solution provides a practical, cost effective, and space saving solution for G5 Power Mac internal storage expansion without sacrificing the data transfer rate. A total of seventeen hard disk drives (nine disk drives internally and eight disk drives externally) can be connected to a G5 Power Mac system, producing a 16x performance increase in sustained data transfer rate.

The MaxConnect internal hard disk drive mounting solution ships with power cables.

MacShield Enhanced Edition

PR: MacShield Enhanced Edition is the next generation of hard drive configuration protection software specifically designed to protect Apple computers from harmful and erroneous changes to the system image and hard drive. A simple reboot restores the computer to the originally established pristine configuration.

MacShield Enhanced Edition takes the proven protection of the Foundation Series MacShield product even further. Like MacShield, MacShield Enhanced Edition is designed to clear Apple computers of unwanted changes such as downloads or deletions, system settings changes, and even installed programs. Upon reboot, all changes disappear, and the computer is restored to its original configuration. Now, exclusively in MacShield Enhanced Edition, should users need to permanently save information to a protected machine, a "Persistent Storage" space can be set up at install. In this space, documents, emails and other information can be saved, remaining unharmed and constant upon reboot.

MacShield Enhanced Edition operates as a buffer zone, allowing users to experiment without penalty or permanency. Changes are written to this buffer zone instead of the hard drive, so system files will never be modified. This provides the ultimate in safety, flexibility and unrestricted access. Additionally, although viruses are not a major concern on the Macintosh platform, users have an extra layer of certainty that no future malware will penetrate the system hard drive. MacShield Enhanced Edition protects the integrity of a systems configuration without fault.

MacShield Enhanced Edition benefits:

Minimize computer maintenance

There is no longer a need to spend a great deal of time restoring systems that have been affected by changes, deletions and downloads.

Provide a consistent configuration:

All system changes are eliminated upon reboot, unless saved to the Persistent Storage space, so the original configuration remains constant.

Unrestricted access:

  • Stealth Mode provides undetectable protection, and eliminates attempts to bypass or negate security.
  • Users are free to explore the entire system without permanently committing changes.

Easy installation and administration:

  • Utilizes standard Apple Installer
  • Can be deployed using Apple Remote Desktop.

Defined user(s) Home Folders are persistent:

  • Defined User changes and data is retained and unaffected by reboot.
  • Users not specifically defined have unrestricted system use, but all changes will be eliminated.

Includes an excellent maintenance package:

  • Annual maintenance includes in-version updates, on-line knowledge base, unlimited toll-free and email technical support, as well as in-version patches and fixes.

System requirements: Mac OS X 10.3 or 10.4.

MacShield Enhanced Edition is $59.99.

CPU Director Changes Cache & CPU Clock Speed on PowerLogix Upgrades

PR: CPU Director allows you to view and configure the cache and processor clock speed settings on your PowerLogix upgrade card. The included utilities allow you to enable or disable the cache "on the fly", change the speed at which your backside cache operates and automatically enable the cache at this speed at boot time. There are also options to disable speculative access (a problem with OldWorld machines that originally did not ship with a G3 or G4 processor) and enable dynamic power management. Finally, if your upgrade uses multiple-processors, and you are running Mac OS X, you can view and change these settings on a per-processor basis.
