Samsung CEO Predicts Death of Hard Drives

Techworld.com's Chris Mellor reports:

"Hard drives are living on borrowed time and will be replaced with solid-state flash memory, according to Samsung's semiconductor CEO Dr. Chang Gyu Hwang.

"Hwang's company has just launched a 16Gb NAND flash chip using 50nm technology, something he used to make his prediction."

Editor's note: With 250 GB sometimes selling for as little as US$100 and 300 GB for US$125, we're down to about 40¢ per GB. Based on the US$50 difference in retail price between the 2 GB and 4 GB iPod nanos and between LaCie's 4 GB and 8 GB Carte Orange (examined below), the new NAND flash chips have got to be in the US$3-5/GB range. It's going to be a while before they'll replace hard drives in anything but handheld devices. dk

Madsonline Lucille Power Adapters

LucillePR: Lucille is a 65 watt AC adapter for specifically for the 15" and 17" PowerBooks. It will work on all iBooks and the 12" PowerBook & 15" TiBook as well. Two years in development, Lucille is three adapters in one - one adapter for your computer, one for your USB hub/cell phone, and one for your iPod. This means you can reduce the number of adapters you carry or plug into your power strip. (FYI, Lucille is the name of BB King's guitar. The design came while watching music.)

LucilleFrom the engineering perspective, this adapter is rock solid. Inside, there is a big capacitor which acts as an energy reservoir. Momentary high demands like start up draw from the reservoir which makes less demands on the switching electronics. What this means for you is longer product life.

Lucille meets Energy Star Requirements by being 87% energy efficient and draws only 0.4 watts of power in a no load state. Power management is becoming important as it is more expensive to produce and purchase energy. In comparison, the Apple adapter draws 0.9 Watts when not in use. Save a little on your electric bill by plugging fewer energy efficient adapters into your power strip. Lucille also runs a cool 59° F or 15° C under full load.

LucilleLucille is a travel adapter. It is energy efficient and dependable. Now, what would BB King do without his Lucille, What will you do without your Lucille? 2 year warranty.

NMS Sleep Utility: A Simple Approach to Laptop Insomnia

PR: NMS is My Answer to My Laptop SIMPLY REFUSING!!! to Sleep Automatically

I live on my laptop and a huge pet peeve of mine is laptop Insomnia. It has plagued every Apple laptop I have used, even before OS X (although sleeping then was so unstable it was best to avoid it). Slowly (or not slow slowly) my system would loose the ability to sleep automatically but could usually be restored with lots work consisting of some combination of permissions repairs, Combo-udpate reinstalls, OF and/or power manager resets, and even disassembly to remove the PRAM battery. It was a pain, always failed again and always progressed to the point where it could not be fixed without a wipe and reinstall.

Not using my laptop Heavy and Hard is not an option but having it run out of juice frequently because I have to leave quickly, get caught on the phone, have a sudden bout of explosive projective vomiting or its southern counterpart, or any other reason I might forget to manually sleep my laptop... well, that's just not cutting it. What's worse is I have had systems that are so not-sleepy that they run the battery totally dead and then turn off the slow-die way which quickly kills a $100 battery.

I just need to count on my system sleeping!!!

What I want for a solution is simple. I want my OS X laptop to sleep absolutely reliably while on battery power so I never have to think about it, or fix it. I don't want the solution to be complicated (those fail too), and I want it to be cheap (or free).

I want Bulletproof and Cheap!

NMS is my answer and although it sounds hokey it actually works great.

I used the original version of NMS for a while in Panther and my laptop ALWAYS went to sleep within 6 minutes and IT WAS GREAT!!

That version was very simple with no options. It forced sleep within three minutes of the Screen Saver. Since I kept the Screen Saver on 3 minutes my system slept somewhere randomly from three to six minutes after idle.

Then Tiger came along and broke NMS, but I was busy so didn't work on it for some time. However I finally got sick of the insomnia and got a flurry of emails asking about it, so Iooked into it and changed the one line of code required. Now NMS works in Tiger. (Released as v1.11)

But given I had a dead weekend (everyone gone, car in shop) I decided to try to make NMS more useful and flexible so others might get more benefit. I added the obvious improvements although it is was still pretty basic.

So then I got to playing and updated it quite a bit. It can now operate completely independent of the Screen Saver and check the idle itself, or continue to use the Screen Saver if that works better. It is still stable with no overhead and sleeps reliably but now it has an installation/configuration application with very improved and less kludgy controls and options (hell, it has options) including direct activation on battery or AC power unrelated to the Energy Saver settings, varying of the time-to-sleep amount, or an Energy Saver Integration mode.

How NMS Works

NMS solves (for me) the constant problem of an invariably corrupt power manager preventing automatic sleep, especially on laptops and so far NMS has been bullet proof. Obviously it will not work for everyone.

NMS is just a run and stay-open AppleScript application that has been made faceless (doesn't show up anywhere in the GUI when it's running) that every so often checks in and when it sees the system has been idling for long enough, or the screen saver is running, it puts the system to sleep using a much less ignorable version of the sleep command than Energy Saver uses. Where Energy Saver says 'Come on honey, aren't you tired, what to you think about going night, night' and the system responds 'In a minute honey', NMSd is more the drill instructor approach of 'LIGHTS OUT IN 15 SECONDS, IN YOUR BUNKS NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW!!!'

Its Sleep Dammit, and it works.

NMS is really a VERY simple application that uses the built-in sleep just like Energy Saver, just a different aspect of it. The included Instructions have much more detail.

The Real NMS is hidden in NMS Sleep Assist. It is the NMSd application.

NMSd is the application that runs invisibly in the background, watches for the need for sleep, checks the Sleep Holds, sets up Panther compatibility, but never takes a bow.

NMS v2.2 beta 4 is out for all to download. NMS v2.2 beta 1 thru 3 are included in the following change list. Beta 2 was never released.

NMS v2.2 beta involves a significant expansion of NMS's features and configurability.

NMSd now correctly handles a larger variety of situations including some where sleeping is not the correct behavior. It can also be configured to adapt to a wider variety of situations where the user defines what correct is. This includes correctly handling unattended wake events like you see with a modem or if the computer is set to wake on a schedule plus some ability to be configured on a per-application level.

NMSd also had a new 'Always Hard Sleep' option, a new mode for extended sleep failures, and the addition of new or improved Activities Sleep Holds, including While Printing, While Burning, and While on Dialup. Enhancement and bug fixes should also to improve NMS's ability to sleep reluctant systems. Overall the code went put through significant cleanup and reorganization as part of a review of the overall paradigm of how NMS works.

NMS Sleep Assist has its GUI completed including a significant amount of work towards Panther friendly changes, a battery installation protocol for new users, and improvement to its GUI handling of install/uninstall and start/stop.

The Script Menu Additions were heavily modified as well with significant reorganization and consolidation with enhancement of the NMSd Status application.

The list of changes.

NMSd background daemon

  • New automatic sleep hold (nicknamed the idle-wake hold) to account for idle wake events
  • Fail safe mode for refractory sleep failure added that uses a light weight "hard sleep"
  • A full time "Hard Sleep" option added to NMSd and the preference window in NMS Sleep Assist
  • A more sophisticated 'While Printing' hold implemented plus a 'While Burning' hold and While connected with PPP hold
  • NMSd and Sleep Assist modified to avoid "Where that Application" dialogs
  • Reworked idle handler to be more streamlined and less modular
  • Stats and counters upgraded to also track persistently on Panther systems
  • Now when a set Timer hard sleep arrives NMSd checks for an active user (in its user space) and alerts them of the pending sleep with options to cancel or delay
  • Further modularity of the startup routines to improve options for dynamic configuration
  • Investigational AppleScript Studio version compiled - it works - hard to control from outside as are all AS programs (not used in released NMS versions)
  • "Force Panther" mode added for testing
  • CPU Utilization Test modified so it quits any running Additions, quits Sleep Assist, and clears the Timer before running. It will also refuse to run for a time-so-sleep settings of less than 3 minutes
  • SOIL protocols added

NMSd Sleep Assist

  • Completion of Sleep Holds screen
  • Continued improvements in Panther compatibility
  • Many bugs fixed
  • GUI now adjust itself to tailor its options based on the host OS
  • Better handling of timeout errors
  • Sent to Jenny Craig (along with the Script Additions)
  • The New Install/Upgrade code, dialogs, and screens were reworked to function differently in Tiger and Panther and present the dialogs and feedback in completely different way for both with elimination of all application modal panels for Panther.
  • A "Force Panther" mode was added (similar to Force Tiger) to allow me to test the Panther code to some degree on my Tiger system.
  • Minor display on the main screen when in Panther mode fixed

Script Menu Additions

There were a large number of changes so I will list the biggies.

  • NMSd Status (now NMS Monitor) heavily upgraded and given an much more central role. It now serves as sort of an NMSd control applet.
  1. Main window further reduced in size and a second mode added that is much smaller than the normal mode. This second mode always floats and shows a subset of what the Full mode shows.
  2. Much more control and information with better feedback
  3. All displays now have embedded controls.
  4. If running it will provide an alert when Timer is nearly up.
  5. Help expanded.
  6. Has absorbed other main Additions.
  7. Will start a non-running NMSd if desired.
  8. Master mode for using NMSd selectively so that NMSd Status can be used to start and stop NMSd automatically without any need for Sleep Assist other than installing and changing advanced settings.
  • The Script Menu Additions were reorganized and renamed to improve the usability of the menu structure.
  • New main Addition added, NMS Information Display. This is a proxy application designed to be called by NMSd or non-AppleScript Studio Script Additions for dialogs and displaying results. It has no independent function. It has 7 different windows that can be called and populated.
  • A subset of the script Menu Additions were updated to use NMS Information Display as was NMSd's CPU Utilization test.

New in this version:

  • Continued changes to reduce Panther issues with the setup/config utility.
  • Script Additions improved.
  • Fixed aberrant behavior when application hold and idle-wake hold were coincident.

System requirements: Mac OS X 10.4 (partially tested on 10.3)
