Reviving a PowerBook G4 with Better Software
Keith Rowland says:
"I have this old Apple PowerBook G4, with a 867 MHz
PowerPC CPU. It's one of the first Apple aluminum laptops from several
years back. This one came with OS X 10.2 Panther OS installed. By
default it came with 256 MB of RAM and a 40 GIG hard drive. Not bad for
the times....
"But as time goes on, software increases in its feature set and
increases its demand on CPU and memory resources. It seems that back
then, web video would play just fine on this little machine....
"So these older computers get pushed aside in favor of faster ones.
But looking over the specs, these old computers are not much less than
some of the brand new netbooks being offered today. So what we must do
is look over the landscape of the applications available for the
netbook arena and pick and choose efficient applications to revive the
older laptops to at least perform as well as a typical netbook."

Apple Flirting with OS X on PCs?
PCR's Robert Peckham, addressing an audience of Windows resellers
considering a venture into what he calls "the minefield of selling
Apple computers", notes that the claim that some Macs can run Windows
faster than dedicated Windows PCs is apparently true, especially with
improvements to the Boot Camp environment in Mac OS X v10.5
Leopard, with as he puts it, "an increasing number of reports that a
Mac running Leopard's Boot Camp and Windows actually out-performs any
equivalent-spec PC."
Peckham also observes that Dell Mini Netbooks can run Mac OS X, and
very well, too, with some interesting implications, notably that Dell
itself is supplying an enabling software patch for hackintosh
installations on the Dell Mini with full instructions posted on Dell's
website. He deduces that it's highly unlikely Apple would allow this
without approving it, but that curiously Apple is taking Mac clone
makers who use a similar software modification to court.
As he said, "interesting."

'$1,999 Price Tag? What $1,999 Price Tag?'
Advertising Age's Rupal Parekh reports:
"Following a complaint from Apple, Microsoft has quietly tweaked at
least one of the ads in its 'Laptop Hunters' campaign to reflect its
rival's lower pricing on its Mac notebooks....
"Just last week Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner was
ecstatic about a phone call from Apple lawyers, who demanded that
Microsoft stop showing the ads because it had lowered its prices. Mr.
Turner went on to say the call from Apple's legal department was the
'greatest single phone call' he's ever taken and that Microsoft plans
to 'keep running them and running them and running them.'"

Mac OS X Netbook Compatibility Chart (Updated July
2009)
BoingBoing's Rob Beschizza says:
"Apple says it's had 'pretty interesting ideas' for a Mac netbook,
but it's everyday users who've already taken action. Most of the
popular netbooks can run OS X, but there are plenty of caveats:
non-functioning components which lack drivers, need to be replaced, or
which simply can't be gotten working at all.
"The short answer: get a HP Mini 1000 or a Dell Mini 9/Vostro
A90."

Dell Mini 9 OS X Capable Netbook for Only
$200
Gizmodo's Sean Fallon says:
"By far, the best and most inexpensive OS X experience on a netbook
can be found on a hacked Dell Mini 9. And now you can get your hands on
one for only $200."
Editor's note: The Dell Mini 9 is being phased out in favor of the
slightly larger Dell Mini 10. dk

Toshiba Reportedly Scaling Up NAND Flash
Production for Apple Order
DigiTimes' Josephine Lien and Jessie Shen report:
"Toshiba is expected to ramp up its NAND flash production to over
90% of its capacity in August, according to sources at memory card
makers. Despite the increases in output, the chipmaker has told
downstream players that its supply to the spot market will be limited,
prompting speculation that the Japan supplier is seeing strong demand
from Apple, the sources indicated...."

iTablet Suppliers Named
The Register's James Sherwood reports:
"Some of the firms tasked with supplying parts for Apple's rumoured
tablet PC have been named.
"Industry sources reportedly told Taiwanese website Apple Daily that
Wintek Corp will supply the tablet's touch-sensitive display....
"...industry sources also claimed that Hon Hai Precision Industry Co
has been selected as the firm tasked with screwing each iTablet
together.
"Hon Hai Precision Industry Co is more commonly known as Foxconn - a
firm that's already worked with Apple to produce the iPhone, various
iPod models and the Mac mini."

Taiwanese Newspaper Reports Apple Tablet in
September
Macworld UK's Mark Hattersley says:
"Yesterday the Financial
Times reported that Apple 'was racing to offer a portable
tablet-sized computer in time for Christmas.'
"Taiwanese paper Apple Daily has upped the ante on the FT, by
claiming a September release date for the device. If true, this would
mean an announcement is just weeks away. Apple traditionally announces
new iPod ranges in September and the device could be revealed at the
same time."

Let the Apple Tablet Wars Begin
Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt says:
"The battle lines are drawn.
"On Friday we had Jason Schwartz, an options strategist long on
Apple, explaining in Seeking Alpha Why Apple's iTouch Tablet Will
Become Its Flagship Product.
"On Monday we heard from Michael Scalisi, an IT manager writing in
PC World, that the Rumored Apple Tablet Is a Train Wreck.
"If the first hurdle of a successful Apple product is to capture the
imagination of the chattering classes, this one is half-way
there...."

Apple Tablet Unveiling Moved Forward?
The Register's James Sherwood reports:
"Apple addicts need no longer wait until early 2010 to get their
hands on the firm's long-rumoured tablet PC, because - contrary to an
earlier report - it's since emerged that the firm's gunning for a
launch within months.
"People briefed on the subject recently told newspaper the
Financial Times that Apple's working towards a September 2009
launch date for the tablet PC...."

Apple's Tablet in Time for Christmas?
ZD Net's Larry Dignan says:
"That long rumored Apple tablet may land in time for the
holidays.
"The Financial Times appears to have confirmed an Apple Insider
report fleshing out many of the details of the Mac tablet. The report
sparked a lot of comment.
"Now the Financial Times reports the following:
"Apple is separately racing to offer a portable, full-featured,
tablet-sized computer in time for the Christmas shopping season, in
what the entertainment industry hopes will be a new revolution."

Apple Tablet Will Be a Train Wreck
PC World's Michael Scalisi says:
"Given the rumor mill chatter, it sounds like the mythical Apple
tablet is all but a done deal. People seem to be talking with certainty
about how, either later this year or early next year, Apple will unveil
a multitouch tablet with a 10-inch screen, 3G wireless broadband, and
iPhone OS possibly subsidized by a Verizon Wireless contract. It would
basically be a big iPod Touch.
"I'm no Apple hater, and I welcome an Apple device to the (don't
call it a) netbook market, but I've got to think this device would be a
flop. This concept is such a train wreck from start to finish that I
don't know where to begin...."

13" MacBook Pro 'a Portable Powerhouse'
Electric Pig's James Holland says:
"If all laptops were like this, we're pretty sure there'd be peace
on earth
"Weirdly, the 13 inch MacBook Pro marks a step backwards for Apple.
It's been two years since the company offered a professional-grade
laptop in anything less than 15 inches. But here it is, a 13 inch
MacBook Pro.
"Not since the 12 inch PowerBook,
discontinued in 2006, have Mac fans wanting a portable powerhouse had
such choice, but how does the diminutive portable stack up against its
bigger brothers?"

WD Ships First 1 TB Mobile Hard Drive
PR: WD has announced two new mobile hard drives that reach
new capacity extremes. The highlight is a one terabyte model - the
industry's highest-capacity 2.5" drive available. Industry-leading 333
GB-per-platter technology enables the new WD Scorpio Blue SATA 2.5"
hard drives to offer mobile storage device and notebook users an
enormous 1 TB capacity. A 750 GB WD Scorpio Blue model also will be
available.
The WD Scorpio Blue 750 GB and 1 TB hard drives have a 12.5 mm form
factor* and are ideally suited for use in portable storage solutions,
such as the newly released My Passport Essential SE Portable USB
Drives. Other applications include select notebooks and small form
factor desktop PCs, where quiet and cool operation are important. Both
WD Scorpio Blue drives deliver high-performance with a 3 gigabits per
second (Gb/s) transfer rate.
"The convergence of the growing mobile computing and digital media
trends produces demand for desktop-like capacities in portable
devices," said Jim Morris, senior vice president and general manager of
client systems at WD. "Our new WD Scorpio Blue drives enable people to
take even more of their digital collections with them wherever they go
and, realizing the value of their data, back up their notebooks on
their My Passport drives."
WD Scorpio Blue hard drives offer high-performance, low power
consumption and cool operation in portable applications. They are
designed with WD features to be reliable and shock resistant while also
delivering industry-leading capacity and performance.
WD Scorpio Blue Features
Massive capacity - Whether they are in an external drive or a
notebook computer, WD Scorpio Blue SATA drives continue to offer the
highest capacity for space-hungry operating systems with plenty of room
left over for photos, music, and video. A slight increase in overall
drive height (750 GB and 1 TB only) has driven storage capacity for
2.5" form factor drives upwards to a realm once thought to be
impossible.
- Quiet - In a notebook drive, silence is golden. WD's exclusive
WhisperDriveô combines state-of-the-art seeking algorithms to
yield one of the quietest 2.5" hard drives on the market. These
algorithms also optimize the way a drive seeks for data, which
significantly improves power consumption. So now silence (and longer
battery life) is golden.
- Reliable and rugged - WD's ShockGuard technology protects the drive
mechanics and platter surfaces from shocks. WD's SecureParkô
parks the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin
down, and when the drive is off. This ensures the recording head never
touches the disk surface resulting in improved long term reliability
due to less head wear, and improved non-operational shock
tolerance.
- Fast and efficient - Ultrafast 3 Gb/s SATA interface speed yields
performance fit for demanding mobile applications.
- WhisperDrive - WD's exclusive WhisperDrive technology combines
state-of-the-art seeking algorithms to produce one of the quietest 2.5"
drives available.
- ShockGuard - Leading-edge ShockGuard technology combines firmware
and hardware advancements to meet the highest combined shock tolerance
specifications required for mobile and notebook applications.
- SecurePark - Parks the recording heads off the disk surface during
spin up, spin down and when the drive is off. This ensures the
recording head never touches the disk surface, resulting in improved
long-term reliability due to less head wear and improved shock
tolerance.
WD Scorpio Blue 750 GB drives (model WD7500KEVT) are available now
through select distributors and resellers; the 1 TB capacity (model
WD10TEVT) is available now configured into My Passport Essential SE USB
drives. The manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for the WD
Scorpio Blue 1 TB drive is $249.99 and for the 750 GB version it is
$189.99. WD Scorpio Blue hard drives are covered by a three-year
limited warranty. More information about WD Scorpio Blue mobile hard
drives may be found on the company's website.
Interfaces:
- SATA 3 Gb/s
- SATA 1.5 Gb/s
- PATA
* 750 GB and 1 TB models are 12.5 mm high and may not be compatible
with all notebook systems. Reportedly, the only Intel-based Mac
notebook with a large enough hard drive bay to accommodate 12.5 mm
drives is the older-style (not unibody) 17" MacBook Pro.
