My journey into the Apple world was a shot in the dark. In July
of 2001 I was shopping for a college computer and moments away from
buying a Dell.
For some reason I went to Apple.com, and on the main page was a
picture of the iBook. I
instantly fell in love, even though I had never used a Mac. I
really wish I could remember why I went Apple's website, because
that decision changed my life considerably.
The moment I saw the iBook I was hooked, and by August I had one
in my hands. I was very impressed by its performance and the
OS.
A few months later 10.1 came out, and I was officially a Unix
maniac. I used my iBook daily till its death in July of 2002
(replaced by a new one in January of 2003).
In June of 2002 I convinced my parents to get a flat panel iMac. At the time they
knew how to connect to the Internet and chat on AIM, that's it. I
thought teaching them a new OS and all of its functions would be a
daunting task.
A month later my mom was emailing everyone she knew, and my dad
was impulse buying off of eBay. Now that
they have had it for a year, I have become terribly proud of my
parents. I tell everyone that if my dad can use a Mac, then anyone
can.
One of the reasons I'm so proud is they are the only people in
our group of family and friends that has a Mac. I know that's not
an irregular thing, but considering they are also the only ones who
use a computer on a daily basis, I think its an exceptional measure
of the Mac platform.
As stupid as this may sound, I feel like 2 years ago I was in
"the matrix" of the computing world . . . and then
suddenly I woke up. Now I can show others the way to computer
nirvana.
