Low End Mac's Incomplete Guide to Linux and BSD on Older Macs

Fedora Linux for PowerPC Macs

Low End Mac publishes an ongoing series of Compleat Guides to things like Mac OS 9 and different computer lines, but we can't do that with Linux and BSD - they are moving targets. Both families of operating systems are under constant development, thus this incomplete guide.

Fedora PPC requires a PowerPC G3 or later, and version 9 requires a New World Mac. A 233 MHz CPU is recommended for using Linux in text mode, 400 MHz for graphical mode. Fedora PPC can occupy over 9 GB of space on your hard drive. There is no Live CD for Fedora PPC.

The Opt key on Apple systems is equivalent to the Alt key on the PC. Where documentation and the installer refer to the Alt key, use the Opt key. For some key combinations you may need to use the Opt key in conjunction with the Fn key, such as Opt+Fn+F3 to switch to virtual terminal tty3.
